Republicans Plan Push to Register Voters
WASHINGTON (AP) - In the coming days, Republicans will step up their push to register 3 million voters this year with the help of an election-year prop - an 18-wheeler full of computers, plasma TVs and multimedia equipment designed to communicate the GOP message.

Republicans will be taking the truck around the country the week of March 6-13 as part of their plan to register 1 million new voters with the help of local volunteers, elected officials and party leaders in various communities.

Republican national Chairman Ed Gillespie said the idea of the 18-wheeler as a marketing tool was borrowed from private industry, which sometime uses such big vehicles to draw the curious at public events.

"We want to bring new people into the party," Gillespie said, "especially young people and people who are not traditionally Republican voters" such as Hispanics and blacks. He said the GOP voter drive has already registered about 500,000 new voters at various events, including the Daytona 500.

The Republican National Committee plans formally to introduce the concept of the big rig Wednesday in front of national headquarters. It will travel around the country over the next eight months to help register voters at campuses, NASCAR races, parades, ethnic festivals and other events.

In the tradition of marketing efforts in private industry, the RNC has even given the big truck a name - "Reggie the Registration Rig."

"NASCAR races, parades, ethnic festivals and other events", but
in my "professional view", the Rethugs would be more successful
registering voters at kkk rallies and aryan nations meetings.

2. If they steal this idea from me, I want royalties:
If they set up the trailer outside movie theaters showing "The Passion of Christ," they should meet their registration quota by the end of the week.

3. "crisis of conscience" or "nostalgia?" Which one?
Perhaps the GOP has suffered many sleepless nights over what happened in Florida in 2000, and now Republicans want to repent by trying to win "the old fashioned way?"

or

The GOP longs for the "good old days" when elections were won based on ideas and debate and...and......and.....I...can't...seem...to...get...my...fingers...to...work...anymore......arghhhhhh......

5. What will happen when they get a flat?
No top level GOPer can screw in a lightbulb, dress him or herself, or breathe through their noses much less change a tire on a big rig. Will they get "Peggy the Reggie-the-Registration-Rig Driver" to do it, assuming they can find a trucker named Peggy?

9. And will the driver be Union?
I can see it now:

"Come and register in the Party that wants to crush Unions by signing-up in our big rig driven by a Union trucker..."

This will require some P.R. work.

10. That's hilarious
Can you imagine them pulling up to a automotive plant or some other business that uses lots of truckers. The Teamsters will make the driver wet himself.

by hand.

Did they?

11. Ya don't suppose...

...they're calling it the "registration rig" for a reason, do ya?

(Actually, neither the GOP or the Dems "processes" voter registrations; that's up to local election officials. But I would urge any Dems taking advantage of this scheme to MAIL IN THEIR OWN registration forms and not leave them in the hands of the GOP "riggers.")

Maybe some super-modified flame-throwing tractors and dragsters exploding off the electoral starting line?
