Head of a minuteman group arrested for double homicide

Three people have been arrested in connection with last months deadly double homicide in Arivaca that left a nine-year-old and her father dead. One of the people arrested for the homicide is the National Executive Director of the Minuteman American Defense group (M.A.D.), a group known for patrolling the border, and is dedicated to "Defending America's Borders" according to their website - http://minutemenamericandefense.org /

Jason Eugene Bush, 38, Shawna Forde, 42 and Albert Robert Gaxiola, 43, were all taken into custody and charged in connection with the murders of 29-year-old Raul Flores and 8-year-old Brisenia Flores. Both were killed during an alleged home invasion.

According to authorities, Bush, Forde, and Gaxiola broke into the home of the Flores family just after midnight on May 30th. At the time, the mother, father and daughter were home. The invaders reportedly shot the three members of the Flores family, killing the father, Raul, and the daughter, Brisenia. The invaders then left the scene.

The mother survived the shooting, called police, and found a gun. Sheriff Dupnik says the three returned moments later to make sure everyone was dead. At that point, the mother shot and injured Bush, and the three fled the scene.

A 41-year-old woman involved with the Minuteman vigilante groups that hunt illegal migrants through the Arizona desert has been arrested for pulling a home invasion and murdering a father and his nine year old daughter last month.

Then it gets ugly and weird. According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Office, Shawna Forde, 43, was arrested south of Sierra Vista, Ariz. today. Her accomplices, Albert Gaxiola and Jason Eugene Bush, were also arrested. Bush was picked up in Kingman on June 11 and Gaxiola in Tucson. The father and daughter, Raul and Brisenia Flores, were murdered May 30.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Office says Forde and her two accomplices pretended to be police and entered the home. A woman in the home is recovering from her injuries.

Forde’s past has been suspect. According to the Washington newspaper, The Daily Herald, Forde’s ex-husband was shot multiple times this past December inside his home but survived. A few days later, Forde reported she had been raped. She called the newspaper to report the rape happened because of her work with the Minuteman vigilantes and published photos of what may or may not have been injuries on her Web site. A few days after that, Forde was found in an alley with a gunshot wound to her arm.

Last night, federal agents with the Bureau of Land Management reported being shot at by four people with rifles while they patrolled on ATVs in the Arivaca area. Nobody’s saying Forde and her crew were involved. Maybe they weren’t. But the area, the Altar Valley, is a favorite locale for vigilantes, drug mules and federal agents. Occasionally, two, maybe more, clash.

Woman with troubled past in Everett now accused in Arizona

An outspoken anti-immigration activist who was at the center of a series of violent crimes in Everett earlier this year now stands accused of the home-invasion killings of an Arizona man and his 9-year-old daughter.

Shawna Forde, 41, and two associates in her Minuteman American Defense group are charged with two counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary and one count of aggravated assault, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department in Arizona.

The May 30 killings were believed to be premeditated and part of a plan to steal money and drugs to finance the Minuteman group she leads. Forde's own family said that the woman weeks ago had discussed using robberies to raise money for her cause.

Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik told the Green Valley News and Sun that Forde was trying right up until her arrest Friday "to get together a large amount of money to further sophisticate the type of operation she's interested in."

Forde denied the charges.

"No, I did not do it," the newspaper quoted her saying as she was led out of the sheriff's office in front of reporters Friday afternoon.

Raul Flores, 29, and his daughter, Brisenia, 9, were killed when a group of armed people, including a woman, forced their way into the home. The child's mother traded gunfire with the attackers. She survived but remains hospitalized with gunshot wounds.

Pima County officials said the intruders had been looking for the couple's other daughter to shoot her, too, but she wasn't home.

On Monday night at around 8pm Shawna was in her kitchen when she was brutally attacked. She was cold cocked and beaten with a bat or some kind of instrument all over her body. I talked to Shawna Forde yesterday about the story written by journalist Scott North of the Everett Herald and she opined that the newspaper story was reasonably fair and balanced and covered most aspects of her life since she was born.

Forde and I both think the newspaper did exactly what it is supposed to do: report facts based on investigation and interrogatories. The story is neither a “hit piece” against Forde, nor a supportive propaganda piece. Simply, it is newspaper reporting at its best and within the professional canons of journalism.

Since Gilchrist seems to have gotten himself in bad odor with much of the anti-immigration community, I don't know how far his recent connections with Forde can be considered to tar his previous associates. But there's certainly a lot out there to examine.

The sentences I put in boldface below point up the degree to which far-right groups and mainstream conservatives are entangled. The seemingly hysterical over-reaction of the mainstream right to the DHS report on the threat from far right groups may have been more justified than it seemed at the time.

The mailing lists Response Unlimited currently offers for sale include the former subscribers to The Spotlight, a now-defunct, virulently anti-Semitic magazine published by Holocaust denier Willis Carto. There is also, priced at $120 per thousand names, a list of 67,000 donors to the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps. Among the thirty-five organizations that have rented the MCDC list so far are former "Ten Commandments Judge" Roy Moore's failed gubernatorial campaign in Alabama, a group called Stop Puerto Rico Statehood and Oliver North's Freedom Alliance. "What this all means," says Neiwert, "is that when someone contributes to the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, their name and contact information is then given to a whole host of right-wing groups, depending on who's buying."

It also means that the formerly grassroots, boots-on-the-border MCDC is now entrenched in the neoconservative Republican establishment. The MCDC's home page now identifies it as "a project of the Declaration Alliance," founded in 1996 by Alan Keyes to oppose abortion and gay rights. The Alliance's president is former Keyes staffer Mary Parker Lewis, also a former "confidential assistant" to William Kristol, editor of the neoconservative Weekly Standard and co-founder of the Project for the New American Century. Connie Hair, another former Keyes staffer, now handles MCDC's media relations as well as those of Diener Consultants.
