(CNN)–Former President George H.W. Bush stood up for his former judicial nominee Sonia Sotomayor Friday, telling CNN Anchor Robin Meade that GOP critics who called President Obama's Supreme Court pick a racist were off-base, and unfair.

"I don't know her that well but I think she's had a distinguished record on the bench and she should be entitled to fair hearings. Not – like the senator John Cornyn said it," he told CNN. "He may vote for it, he may not. But he's been backing away from these…backing off from those radical statements to describe her, to attribute things to her that may or may not be true.

"And she was called by somebody a racist once. That's not right. I mean that's not fair. It doesn't help the process. You're out there name-calling. So let them decide who they want to vote for and get on with it."

High-profile Republican voices like former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh had both accused the judge of racism for her past comment that a "wise Latina" might make more informed judicial decisions than a white male. Gingrich later backed away from that assessment.

10. Rush has always hated GHWB
The only time I ever listened to Rush was in the early 1990's. He loathed George Herbert.

6. Poppy appointed her to her U.S. District Court seat, so there's some loyalty there.

That's something the RW smear machine seems to forget. They've taken such a knee-jerk approach to oppose anything Obama proposes or appoints only on the grounds that it came from the opposite party.

8. Duh...Sotomayer is a right leaning jurist.
who will move the court further to the right (if possible). Just because O appointed her does not make her even close to a liberal. He is a right leaning corporate politician, she is a right leaning jurist. BX2 = right wing totalitarianists. Why is there any confusion here.

Bush Sees Kin As `the Little Brown Ones'

The Washington Post | August 17, 1988 |

Vice President Bush referred to three of his Mexican-American grandchildren as "the little brown ones" today as he pointed them out to P esident and Nancy Reagan at the Belle Chasse Naval Air Station here.

Bush's comments were picked up by the public-address system and by network microphones.
