Swedish pirates capture EU seat
Source: BBC News

Sweden's Pirate Party has won a seat in the European Parliament.
The group - which campaigned on reformation of copyright and patent law - secured 7.1% of the Swedish vote.
The result puts the Pirate Party in fifth place, behind the Social Democrats, Greens, Liberals and the Moderate Party.
Rickard Falkvinge, the party leader, told the BBC the win was "gigantic" and that they were now negotiating with four different EU Parliamentary groups.
"Last night, we gained political credibility," said Mr Falkvinge.

2. Now that's a pretty interesting political spectrum...
And frankly much more appealing than what we have here. :)

5. very interesting - maybe a tiny movement is born

reforming the patent and copyright office would be one of my big anti-corporate issues if I were in office. They are constantly manipulated by corporate interests in this country and have become an embarrassment to the founding father's vision of innovation and market development.

8. you got that. did you know
that even if you pay an architect a ridiculous sum of money, the work product is their intellectual property, and you cannot fire them, and take that work to someone else. sad but true. thank you disney.

12. Yes - and that's as it SHOULD be - and far to few and far between.

An Architect is like an Artist or Author - you do NOT pay for "plans", etc. The DESIGN is HIS intellectual property. You "pay" for his TIME and IDEAS and KNOWLEDGE and EXPERTISE, not pieces of PAPER!!!

Just like a Doctor or Lawyer - except these two groups don't result in an ARTISTIC CREATION!!!

And as for a "ridiculuous sum" - how much do you think an Architect should get paid for MONTHS of work on a project? For all their education, etc. Architect's as a group are among the LOWEST paid for their serevices. All but a SMALL FEW make "big bucks"...

What an incredible ingnorant post you wrote.

Completely.

First, you can and people often do "fire" or cease working with a particular architect. It is the NORM, not the exception.

You should NOT be able to take one Architect's DESIGN and IDEAS and let someone else "work" with them!!!

That's PLAGERISM, pure and simple...

Of course, it's difficult for the ignorant to understand...

It's far to EASY to STEAL an Architect's Intellectual PROPERTY as it is now, and the laws and FINES should be QUADRUPLED now to prevent someone from STEALING an Architect's PROPERTY!!!

13. well
$13K for basically no plans, bilked for more money at every turn, in spite of a contract that said in plain english that is was a lump sum fee. and wont even give me back MY original sketches and writings. or the drawings of the existing building, which is certainly not intellectual property.
and i am an artist. i fully understand what it means to work on a commission, what it means to sell rights, what it means to be a designer and work for someone else.
plagiarism? give me a break. it is my house. it is my dream. it is my plan, not his. i brought it to him. he did a piss poor job of fleshing it out, paid little attention to what i wanted, brought almost nothing to the project, and couldn't draw his way out of a paper bag. he spent 2 days trying to figure out a stairway. how much am i supposed to pay for that? 2 days.
please.

15. While I am not for profiting off the works of others as my own, I am for free sharing of knowledge
and information. One of the key quotes from the original article for me was:
"The establishment is trying to prevent control of knowledge and culture slipping from their grasp.

"When the Pirate Bay got hit, people realised the wolf was outside the front door.

"That happened one month before the ballot opened, so it had quite a rallying effect," he said. "

This is what it is about to me - protecting people from exploitation by greedy corporate overlords.

9. I was thrilled to see this
a true - if small - win for people over corporations and just general brainwashing of people into believing corporations are "their friends". The opposition will be on record - and trumpeted over the internet where those in power with bad intentions can't (at least yet) censor and control us.

16. Some find that hard to believe,
so it may be helpful to tell you a little more about our beliefs. We have evidence that a Flying Spaghetti Monster created the universe. None of us, of course, were around to see it, but we have written accounts of it. We have several lengthy volumes explaining all details of His power. Also, you may be surprised to hear that there are over 10 million of us, and growing. We tend to be very secretive, as many people claim our beliefs are not substantiated by observable evidence. What these people don’t understand is that He built the world to make us think the earth is older than it really is. For example, a scientist may perform a carbon-dating process on an artifact. He finds that approximately 75% of the Carbon-14 has decayed by electron emission to Nitrogen-14, and infers that this artifact is approximately 10,000 years old, as the half-life of Carbon-14 appears to be 5,730 years. But what our scientist does not realize is that every time he makes a measurement, the Flying Spaghetti Monster is there changing the results with His Noodly Appendage. We have numerous texts that describe in detail how this can be possible and the reasons why He does this. He is of course invisible and can pass through normal matter with ease.
I’m sure you now realize how important it is that your students are taught this alternate theory. It is absolutely imperative that they realize that observable evidence is at the discretion of a Flying Spaghetti Monster. Furthermore, it is disrespectful to teach our beliefs without wearing His chosen outfit, which of course is full pirate regalia. I cannot stress the importance of this enough, and unfortunately cannot describe in detail why this must be done as I fear this letter is already becoming too long. The concise explanation is that He becomes angry if we don’t.

You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s. For your interest, I have included a graph of the approximate number of pirates versus the average global temperature over the last 200 years. As you can see, there is a statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.

Flying Spaghetti Monsterism

Arrrrrgh!

May you be touched by His noodly appendage.

That puts Pastafarianism on an even keel with most established religions.

14. Three things to get rid of:
-the two party system
-all additions and enhancements to Intellectual Property laws since the Constitution; that was plenty of protection.
-corporate personhood.

We need about 15 or 16 parties IMHO, but I'd be happy with 6 or 7.
