U.S. Justice Dept to probe Kansas abortion murder
Source: Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Justice Department said on Friday it is launching an investigation into the murder of Kansas abortion provider George Tiller, who had been reviled by anti-abortion groups.
The Justice Department said it would investigate whether Tiller's murder violated a 1994 U.S. law that establishes penalties for those who block access to abortion services.

Kansas authorities have charged Scott Roeder with murder in the Sunday shooting death of Tiller in his church.

Tiller was one of only a few physicians in the United States willing to perform late-term abortions, those performed after the 20th week of gestation when a fetus potentially could survive outside the womb and legal under certain conditions.

Tiller's Wichita clinic had been the site of several mass protests by anti-abortion groups and was bombed in 1985. The doctor was shot in both arms by an abortion opponent in 1993.

After the shooting, Attorney General Eric Holder directed agents to protect other abortion facilities.

Let's hope the investigation is thorough enough to examine the involvement of Operation Rescue and similar militant forced-birth groups.

8. Unfortunate that someone has to die in order to get an investigation by the DOJ
I hope that this investigation helps them to see that there are plenty of highly dangerous groups out there that are producing murderers like Scott Roeder. It shouldn't take very long for them to figure out that the murder of Dr. Tiller wasn't an isolated event. These extremists pose a great danger to others. At the very least, they need to be monitoring these groups on a regular basis. They need to really improve their cyber monitoring, because these groups use the internet to spread hate and make threats. I was shocked by the content of these websites and I really want to know why these sites continued to exist as hotbeds of extremism. How can they not know about these websites which clearly show criminal intentions on the part of the members?

10. well, time to whip out the Patriot Act on them
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USA_PATRIOT_Act

The contrived acronym stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001.

these nuts qualify as terrorists

12. apparently a woman at operation Rescue contacted th murderer several times before the murder, people
were reporting Dr Tiller's movements and location. in discussion i heard between NPR and TV said the woman had previously done 2 years in jail for having explosives in her car

the FBI had been contacted numerous times about the murderer having damaged the clinic on numerous times in violation of federal protection laws, had the FBI acted DR Tiller would be alive and and OR's nut case would still be in jail.. they did nothing. even with video tape of the crime and numerous wittinesses. the FBI said a grand jury would have to be called.. none was

Bu$h43 called off the FBI and gave the extremists free rein to violate federal laws protecting health care clinics

17. Call me crazy...
...but I'm pretty sure that killing abortion-providing doctors could reasonably qualify as "blocking access" to services.
