Senator Says Gay Marriage Bill Will Pass In New York

NY State Senator Thomas Duane says there are enough votes to pass a bill to legalize same-sex marriage

June 2, 2009

NEW YORK ( WPIX) -- ... Senator Thomas Duane (D- Manhattan) says he has the support of more than the 32 senators needed to pass the bill ... However, his claim is being disputed by other members of the legislature ... Governor Paterson is urging the Senate leadership to put the bill to a floor vote regardless of the vote count. Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith (D-Queens) has said he won't do it before the legislative session ends on June 22nd unless he's sure there are enough votes to pass it ...

1. I wish I knew why he was so confident...
All indications are that we've lost a fatal number of Democratic votes, and have not picked up the Republicans needed to make up the difference.

2. I don't know NY politics. Maybe he thinks there's enough grassroots power to pressure
swing legislative votes, if put in motion? :shrug:

3. Unfortunately, our legislature is pretty solidly fossilized.
My own state senator (one of the people leading the charge against the bill) has been in his current office for... wait for it... 34 years.

Even the Democrats don't always react well to grassroots pressure. So either Duane is being overly optimistic, or he's got a hole card somewhere.
