Opponents of abortion condemned the murder of abortion provider George Tiller but used a platform outside the Supreme Court Monday to blast President Obama's abortion policies and strongly question the beliefs of his high court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

Leaders of the anti-abortion movement gathered in front of the Supreme Court Monday morning to denounce the murder of abortion doctor George Tiller, who was gunned down Sunday while attending church in Wichita, Kan.

The pro-life activists also used the platform to blast President Obama's abortion policies and strongly question the beliefs of his Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor.

What is it with the media calling Dr. Tiller an 'abortion doctor'. That is straight out of the right wingnut talking points. The man was a gynecologist and a surgeon that happened to provide abortion services as part of his practice. I am sure he also provided many other services to his female patients. The media does him and every sane person in this country a big disservice by buying into the 'abortion doctor' label.

when muslim leaders offer fake apologies of "we think terrorism is wrong but you guys totally brought it on yourselves because . . . " following a radical muslim killing people they don't seem to get the same degree of criticism/skepticism. And they aren't nearly as forthright or unanimous in their condemnation of terrorism as christian leaders seem to have been for this murder.

I think these leaders deserve credit for at the very least saying the right things in public. Do they mean it? I can't say, I don't pretend to read minds. But coming out against this sort of thing publicly is definitely better than remaining silent (or condoning it of course) and they should be encouraged to do so, rather than denounced for it.

Continue lambasting them for denouncing terrorism and eventually they may stop. Certainly that is worse?

No doubt some people are celebrating. But it's painting with a pretty broad brush (and entirely unfair one at that) to label all Christians or even a majority as extremists who are pleased with this act of terrorism. I've seen no evidence to back up such an assertion and quite a bit to the contrary.

and their minuscule number of extremists. It's about a general meeting of church leaders who are opposed to abortion (which is not synonymous with wanting to kill doctors or burn down clinics), representing (if recent polls are to be believed) the majority of the country that is opposed to abortion. Westboro is essentially one extended family, and I've yet to meet any christian that supports their actions, hardly a representative sample.

Yes there are churches that support this. And there are mosques that support terrorism. I don't feel it's any more fair to label all muslims terrorists over their extremists than it is to label all christians the same over theirs.

The majority oppose this, and in the absence of counter evidence I'm going to take their condemnations and condolences at face value.
