Some in GOP Criticize Bush's Wedding Ban (Log Cabin Repubs)
A leader of a GOP group that supports gay rights criticized President Bush's proposal for a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, calling it a "recipe for disaster."

The Log Cabin Republicans worry that Bush's stance on same-sex marriage risks alienating the 1 million gays and lesbians who voted for him in 2000.

"The federal marriage amendment is a big problem for us, and it should be for any person who supports equality. The constitution should not be used as a political football," Mark Mead, the group's political director, told about 25 prospective members late Thursday at the Albuquerque Press Club.

Across town, more than 120 same-sex partners packed the Metropolitan Community Church for a special meeting late Thursday. Many had received marriage certificates from the Sandoval County Clerk's Office last Friday only to be told later that day they were invalid.

(snip)

Mead was in Albuquerque to help in the creation of New Mexico's first Log Cabin chapter. The group has offices in Washington, D.C., and 20 other states.

1. It's time for the Log Cabin Republicans to fold up their tent and go home
Their president basically said that their relationships are not equal to heterosexual relationships and that they do not deserve equal legal rights. Why they would want to continue voting Republican after that is a mystery to me. True, their taxes may be lower, but they will be second class citizens. The LCR should disband.

He lies!

Who said he would leave gay marriage would be up to the states?

4. "risks alienating the 1 million
gays and lesbians who voted for him in 2000", so that is their concern...that chimp doesn't get those peoples votes again. If they are worried about equality why in the hell are they repukes to begin with. I'm not even gay but I sure know what party cares about equality and what party doesn't.

7. The answer is
They're NOT worried about equality--for anyone except themselves.

These, frankly, are people who don't give a s**t about women's rights, children's rights, civil rights, education, clean air--all the things other Republicans don't give a s**t about either.

They just thought their checkbooks would get them into the club, and now they're mad cause they found out they're treated no better than poor people.

If the Republicans backpedalled or even softened their stance on this issue, you can bet this bunch would be right back in the fold.
