GOP says Democrats' climate proposal does little
Source: Associated Press

WASHINGTON – The climate change proposal developed by congressional Democrats and endorsed by President Barrack Obama does little to reduce global warming and saddles Americans with high energy costs, Republicans said Saturday.

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, in the GOP's weekly radio and Internet address, said the House's climate bill was "a classic example of unwise government." The address culminated a week of coordinated Republican attacks on the Democratic proposal, which would require the first nationwide reductions in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.

GOP House members used the weeklong Memorial Day break recess to drum up voter opposition to the Democratic bill. The governor's criticism echoed Republican lawmakers' arguments at "energy summits" in Pennsylvania, Indiana and California and at other forums during the week.

The proposal to cap greenhouse emissions "will cost us dearly in jobs and income and it stands no chance of achieving its objective of a cooler earth" because other nation's such as China and India will not have to follow, Daniels said.

17. Conservatives see no shades of gray
It either black or white. If it doesn't completely solve all the problems, it's not worth doing.

2. And whose fault is that?
Surely not the people who don't believe in global warming and are in the pockets of oil executives. No, no, no.

14. I thought the RW'ers didn't believe Global Warming was something
Edited on Sun May-31-09 07:30 AM by rasputin1952
that required anything "done" anyway...after all, "there's no such thing, it's a scam".

What alternative are they offering, drill for more oil; burn more high sulfur coal?

For whatever reason, they just can't grasp the Rule of Exponential, no matter what we do in this age, we add to the natural aspect, often in far greater amounts with far more detriment. It does not take a mathematician to figure out that if 500 tons of CO2 comes from a natural source, and 500 tons comes from human activity, there is a sum of 1000 tons of CO2, 500 of which came from human activity, double, in this simplified example than would be "natural". One need not be of Mensa caliber to figure out humans have a great impact.

Perhaps the RW'ers figure the "breath of God" will clear the air.

edit: dumb typo...

15. That was a couple of memes ago. First, it wasn't happening. Then, it was happening, but
all Mother Nature's fault and inevitable. Nothing humans were doing was impacting it. And now, apparently, it exists, but Democrats sure don't know how to deal with--especially not without hurting the economy, which is still sacred. And, mixed in somewhere in there was the pseudo religious "dominionist" view--Since Genesis says God gave Adam dominion over everything, people are supposed to rape the planet. (Ok, not an exact quote.)

Wonder how important economic growth is going to seem when their grandbabies (and they) are dying for lack of edible food, clean air and clean water?

BTW, folks are starting to invest in farms now, especially in places like Africa. Poor Africa always gets ripped off, whether we are talking slaves, gold, diamonds or arable land.

16. I just graduated from college w/a degree in Renewable Fuels...
and I have spoken to people that actually tell me that there is nothing to worry about, as "God will refill the oil fields because he knows people need oil"...which to me is a :wtf: moment.

People are in such denial, and they always have been, when it comes to finite resources. Back in the '70's Congress passed a Clean Air Bill that mandated that all coal fired industries, (power plants in particular), had to install Scrubber Technology to aid in cleaning up the air. The problem was the loophole where existing plants were grandfathered and did not have to meet the Scrubber Technology mandate, only "new" plants were required to adhere to the new law. The loophole became apparent when new plants weren't built, but existing plants were merely "upgraded" and expanded. Same thing with internal combustion engines...plenty of technology out there to deal with current problems, but most people are just plain indifferent or scared of change. It costs about $150 to change a vehicle to flex-fuel, an engine that can burn E-85/90, but for whatever reason, be it economic, or just outright ignorance, people resist such things.

I try to tell people that every time the "gas up" with petroleum, they buy another box of grenades for the Middle East, that seems to hit home, but it is a difficult to get people to change, even when said change would benefit them immeasurably...:hi:

18. GOP has nothing and having total control for 6 years, never mind congressional control for 14 years,
they can STFU. They had nothing, they have nothing, they won't ever have anything.

20. GOP would prefer to curse the darkness than light a candle
In other words instead of doing a little bit, they would rather continue to either ignore the problem or actively make it worse.
