Notre Dame 'inappropriate:' Steele
Source: Chicago Tribune

by Mark Silva

The honorary degree that President Barack Obama will draw today from the University of Notre Dame, where he is delivering a disputed commencement address, is "inappropriate,'' according to the chairman of the Republican National Committee.

That was RNC Chairman Michael Steele's word for the degree to be conferred upon the Democrat today at the Catholic campus where some students are sitting out the commencement address of the pro-abortion rights and pro-embryonic stem cell research president..

Steele appeared opposite Tim Kaine, governor of Virginia and chairman of the Democrtic National Committee, on NBC News, Meet the Press this morning.

2. Good God, everyone, we're done for. The GOP chairman has just called
Obama's receiving an honorary degree from Notre Dame "inappropriate."

4. More GOP astroturf
Didn't see anybody at Notre Dame complaining when they gave Junior an honorary degree, despite his track record on the death penalty. Looks like Catholic 'teachings' matter only when you want to criticize a Democrat.

6. About right
And a lot of the Catholic noise makers whining about this are mad because the rest of us elected a candidate who goes against everything they want to see happen on Earth - not just in regards to abortion.

21.  there is a legitimate debate about the death penalty within the Catholic Church
as opposed to abortion which is evil in all situations, or some tripe like that

it seems as if issues like the death penalty and the Iraq war and torture and other favorites of the right wing can be debated but liberal issues like being pro-choice and for gay rights aren't

makes you wonder which side the Church leadership is on

23. Exactly
It was started as a faux outrage by the Cardinal Newman Society who critizie anything and everything that is not approved by Rome . This is the GOP's attempt to rile up the ultra-social conservative base after getting beat down by the Obama movement. They are not getting any traction at all on this.

Much of the MSM has ignored this while bloggers and the conservative echo chamber. Otherwise nobody else really cares.

31. I saw one of the graduating class being interviewed on TV.
Edited on Mon May-18-09 03:08 AM by Lasher
It was a long interview of a graduate who opposed having Obama there. The young lady was planning to attend an alternate ceremony in the Grotto, where someone besides Obama would be speaking. The reporter asked her why there was such a problem having Obama there, since there was no protest when GWB received his honorary degree despite his track record on capital punishment and war. Judging by the graduate's response, I was certain that she had been given the question ahead of time and that the answer had been rehearsed.

Edit: Holy shit, I just looked this up in the news. Two dozen graduates attended the alternate ceremony in the Grotto. This was out of a class of more than two thousand! One fucking percent!

5. I thought it "inappropriate" that the chimp was ever allowed anywhere near a college.
Somehow "higher learning" just didn't fit with my image of him. Similarly, I feel the same way about Caribou Barbie.

Steele can piss and moan all he wants, Obama IS the POTUS and he is gonna do public appearances even if he isn't some village idiot from Texas.

14. And yet the Bush crime family's name and money got him through
Yale and Harvard and into elected offices he never should have held. If the Ivy League schools were totally serious about scholarship they never would have admitted or graduated this half wit loser.

7. and ...
why is that, Mr. Steele ?

because he doesn't want to waterboard folks, won an election fair and square (rather than the controversial 2000 Florida & 2004 Ohio), can talk till an intelligent person (rather than an overfed buffon!), taking America on it's road to recovery ..

wait ... may be you are right ... it is inappropriate to give him one Dr title, give him three ...

and by the way, when did it become a rule that losers dictate what others do ...

an honorary PhD. There's still hope though. I heard University of Phoenix is going to email him one. In exchange, he'll write a commencement email. :bounce:

15. ...
But it was not inappropriate to have every president since like Eisenhower speak at Notre Dame, who supported everything from the death penalty to war, something the Cathaholics supposedly abhor. This is another one of those manufactured issues by the religious right, plain and simple. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there was some racial tinge to this whole affair.

17. I'd like to add one little tidbit of information
Most single families are headed by the mother...and there are A LOT of them. Many time the fathers leave for another woman, can't handle the responsibility, or are just plain dead pans. Many are never home anyway, so what's the difference. Many don't even pay support. Men should have NO say in what a woman does with her body UNLESS he signs a paper stating that he is willing to support and rear the child himself first, and has it notarized. And that's only if he hangs around long enough. And then the decision should be between the two parties involved. These hypocrites are ridiculous. I wonder how many of their spouses have undergone this most unpleasant of procedures. They could care less about the children "living" on this earth today as they do nothing to help them. They keep their money in their fat pockets and giving any is like tearing their arms off. Unless of course it is a tax write-off. As for stem cell research...I'm sure Christ would rather have the embryos that are discarded every day, put to the good use of possibly healing or saving the life of someone "living" now. This is one of the main reasons the religious right and republican party have zero credibility. Granted they do have big mouths and are very violence oriented, but sense they have absolutely none of. Get them OUT of our personal lives.

26. Should Pro-Choice Students Not Be Given Degrees?
I know it sounds absurd, but there is a precedent sent for private institutions disciplining students for moral indiscretions.

Pretty thought provoking article here.
