Lawyer: Gitmo prisoner slashed wrist, hurled blood
Source: AP

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — A Yemeni held at Guantanamo slashed his wrist and hurled the blood at his lawyer during a meeting at the prison, the attorney said Monday, describing the incident as a suicide attempt by a psychologically troubled man who should be returned home immediately for treatment.

Adnan Latif used a piece of veneer from a table to saw through a vein in his wrist, holding his arms down beneath the table to disguise his actions from the attorney, an interpreter and guards watching the meeting Sunday over a video monitoring system, lawyer David Remes said.

After Latif threw the blood, guards rushed in and subdued and treated the prisoner, said Remes, of the Washington-based human rights law firm Appeal for Justice, which represents a number of prisoners from Yemen.

...

Latif, who is about 33, was captured by Pakistani forces after leaving Afghanistan and was turned over to the United States. Military authorities say he is a suspected member of al-Qaida who fought with the Taliban, but he says he is a victim of mistaken identity and only went to Afghanistan for medical treatment.

He has been held at Guantanamo without charge since January 2002. His lawyer says he is kept in isolation in the psychiatric ward of the prison, claims to hear voices and see ghosts and has repeatedly tried to commit suicide.

1. My stomach hurts...
...after reading stories like this about Guantanamo.

This man has never been tried for anything! He's been held "in isolation" for six years. Six years!!!!

I can only imagine what goes on in the "psychiatric ward" of that Hannibal Lecter hell hole.

I'm so disgusted. So sick. Why in the hell isn't this place closed?? It's so wrong! It's so unAmerican!

Charge these people with a crime, give them a trial--and either set them free or put them in prison.

No country should be allowed to have a prison, sequestered from everything, where people are held indefintely
and never given a trial.

This is so.....sad and sick. I weep for my country and Obama damn well better do something about this.

If we can't even change this perverse, unConstitutional, disgusting behavior---I don't know
what the hell "change" is then.

2. Absolutely agreed. . .
. . .I'll just add this. . .

Mr.President, since you are going to Buchenwald in June to honor those who suffered the Holocaust as well as your uncle who helped liberate that camp,

how about stopping over at Gitmo prison to give these prisoners hope for a fair, speedy, public trial and a symbolic gesture that we are returning to a rule by laws?

JUST SAYIN'

4. This sounds a bit suspect
"Latif, who is about 33, was captured by Pakistani forces after leaving Afghanistan and was turned over to the United States. Military authorities say he is a suspected member of al-Qaida who fought with the Taliban, but he says he is a victim of mistaken identity and only went to Afghanistan for medical treatment."

I had no idea that the Afghan medical system of 2001-2002 was superior to that of Yemen. Who'd have thought that would be the case?

5. USA fricken sucks - close the damm illegal prisons - - - frigadee
.
.
.

show me that "change"

USA is "apologizing" all the time for killing innocent people

4 Canadian soldiers at the beginning of the Afghanistan invasion -

thousands of civilians since

I'm sorry USAmerica

"I'm sorry" doest cut it WHEN YOU KEEP ON KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE!

I really believe that the USA leaves something out when they offer these apologies for slaughtering innocent people.

I think they mean

"we're sorry we got caught"

prove me wrong

stop killing
