Severe H1N1 hospitalizes Alberta girl
Source: Calgary Herald

CALGARY - A young Alberta girl with H1N1 influenza A has been hospitalized in what appears to be Canada’s first severe case of swine flu.

Alberta Health announced Monday an Edmonton girl is in stable condition in hospital after contracting the disease, although it is not clear where she picked it up since she wasn’t travelling.

Until now, all Canadian cases of the virus have been “mild” and have not required hospitalization.

“We have one young girl that was admitted to one of our hospitals with a more severe form of illness,” said Dr. Andre Corriveau, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health.

4. Just the beginning...
The economic impact of a pandemic is what has resulted in everyone suddenly declaring it isn't a pandemic. It is.

5. This doesn't scare me as much as the news that a herd of swine
in Canada caught this same flu from a human. It looks like this virus is adept at jumping from species to species, and every jump is a chance to pick up some nasty components.

7. The girl,
who has been in hospital for four days, “is doing well under care in the hospital,” according to Corriveau.

Health officials are looking into whether she has underlying conditions that might predispose her to more serious illness.
