WASHINGTON, April 25 (Reuters) - Kansas state health officials have confirmed two cases of swine flu, just minutes after New York health officials said they had eight probable cases, CNN reported on Saturday.

Health officials across the United States are testing for the new and unusual strain of H1N1 swine flu that is suspected of killing 68 people in Mexico and that has caused mild illness in at least eight people in the United States.

Mods, not sure if you want to combine all the flu stories into one or not. Fine with me if you do.

3. And another
Managua, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) Nicaragua is adopting measures to prevent contagion with the swine fever outbreak affecting Mexico and the US that also reports human-to-human transmission. The National System for Disaster Prevention, Mitigation and Assistance (SINAPRED) banned live pigs and porcine derivative imports from Mexico or crossing through Mexico, which has already reported more than 20 fatalities.

El Salvador, Costa Rica and Guiatemala adopted similar measures, and the latter has placed an epidemiological closure of its border with Mexico.

4. In a nation of over 300 million it has caused mild illness in at least 8 people?
Also, "suspected" of killing 68 people in Mexico? I think this is hardly a reason to panic, but for some any reason to panic is good enough.

From the CDC this morning: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/investigation.htm

8. The real point is...it has potential to be devastating...
it is spreading quickly, and a person is fine one day, dead the next...yes, perhaps nothing to be afraid off...but it hurts NO ONE to pay attention, and take proper precautions...just because no one has it now...doesn't mean they won't...panic doesn't necessarily help, but proper care just might save your life...wb

2 swine flus in Kan., US total 11; 8 likely in NY
By VERENA DOBNIK – 14 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — At least two cases of the human swine influenza have been confirmed in Kansas, bringing the U.S. total to 11. At least eight more are suspected in students at a New York City high school, but health officials say they don't know whether they have the same virus that has killed scores of people in Mexico.

A strain of the flu has killed as many as 68 people and sickened more than 1,000 across Mexico. The World Health Organization chief says the strain has "pandemic potential" and it may be too late to contain a sudden outbreak.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta says besides the two confirmed cases in Kansas, there are nine in California and Texas.

Samples from New York have been sent to the CDC for more testing. Results are expected Sunday.

Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 05:53 PM by Snazzy
Needs to be rumor control on this stuff bad.

edit: that is to say that at the school, there may be 100+ cases, but they sampled 9, got 8 positives.

edit2: and that should be partial positives. Won't know till tomorrow for certain.

6. I live in Kansas
So of course I am somewhat concerned. The fact that the WHO is taking notice and ratcheting up plans makes me a bit more concerned than I might be otherwise. Not to don a tin foil hat here, but I always wonder what we're not being told. If the WHO is getting involved... I'm just saying.

7. There is a good chance this outbreak is not by accident.
I'd be more worried about the health fascism that may follow with marshall law and forced vacs, which could be the real killer.

Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 05:49 PM by That Is Quite Enough
The whole new swine flu thing, coupled with the rumors I've been hearing about the dangerous meningitis outbreak in Florida, is pretty scary. Gonna have to wait a bit longer before I start wearing masks and avoiding crowds, though.

Though Fort Detrick is where they managed to recreate a strain of the 1918 Spanish Flu, I believe.

11. Two swine flu cases confirmed in Dickinson County, Kansas
Source: Kansas City Star

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment has confirmed two cases of swine flu involving two adults in the same household in Dickinson County.

KDHE officials said one had recovered and the other is still being treated, but neither was hospitalized.

One of the patients had recently traveled to Mexico, flying in and out of Wichita, the KDHE said. Both patients work in Saline County and became ill with the same strain of swine flu that has been identified in Mexico, California and Texas.

"It's not yet known whether this will become the next flu pandemic," Jason Eberhart-Phillips, state health officer and director of the KDHE Division of Health, said in a release. "We are working closely with health agencies at all levels and are continuing to monitor these cases. We are taking this situation very seriously."

22. All it takes is one airplane....
That is the reality of our modern world. Within 24 hours, a contagious disease can be spread across a continent. And within 48 hours across the world. One passenger on one plane. All it takes.

The number of cases, despite the fact it is being discovered around the country, is possibly a good sign. Today anyway. Who knows about tomorrow.

Edited on Sat Apr-25-09 07:28 PM by MissDeeds
And all it takes is one infected person. Each and every devastating disease started with one person.
I trust that this will all be much ado about nothing, but experts in the field are taking this very seriously. Perhaps we should as well.
