Teresa Heinz Kerry says U.S. will one day accept gay marriage
Edited on Wed Feb-25-04 01:53 AM by scottxyz
"I think with time and without a lot of politicization of this, we'll get there," said Heinz Kerry, who is on a three-day campaign swing through California, which holds its primary next week. "I think our country is basically a tolerant country."

She said she expected the Bush campaign would use her husband's views on the issue against him in the presidential race if Kerry became the Democratic nominee.

"It's a campaign year, what can I say?" Heinz Kerry said. "They'll use everything, everything."

Heinz Kerry said she sees the same sex marriage debate from the perspective of a mother because she has many friends struggling to come to terms with children who are gay. "I look at it in a human context because I have friends in those situations, and it's terrible. All we owe people is dignity, respect and civil rights. I think the country will evolve."

"What is the most damaging, I think, to all of us about many of the actions of this administration," Heinz Kerry said, "has been the cynicism with which they have perpetrated their positions and in which they have moved to trap us and, in a sense, terrorize us. Because it paralyzes us."

Teresa Heinz Kerry sounds pretty cool! This is a whole lot more supportive and honest than Laura Bush - who would only say that "some people" find gay marriage "very, very shocking" but refused to say how she herself felt about this issue:

Laura Bush says gay marriages are "a very, very shocking issue" for some people... Asked how she feels about the issue personally, Mrs. Bush replies: "Let's just leave it at that."

2. Yes, with time
I realize that's true and politically smart, but I'd rather see Kerry take a firm stand on this. If marriage is good, gay marriage is good. The Mass. SC was right, separate but equal doesn't measure up.

3. Expect more "Divide and Conquer" Issues
Like this one, which just serve to piss off our left wing.

Dear Left Wing: Please chill.

5. She said "evolve." God, this is refreshing.
After the past few years of hearing that our nation has perfected heaven on earth, it's a blast of fresh air to hear a public figure speaking about America and Americans evolving. We need this kind of tolerant liberal theme in our public discourse. It's time to stop evoking 9/11, stop beating our chest, and stop declaring how we're going to destroy evil. We could start eliminating some evil right here at home, and replacing it with love.

Why, I can almost forgive Teresa for holding Wal-Mart stock. Maybe she can do some evolving, too. ;-)
