(Vermont) Senate votes to override Douglas marriage bill veto
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 09:29 AM by Ian David
Source: Burlington Free Press

The Vermont Senate this morning has voted to override Gov. Jim Douglas' veto of the same-sex marriage legislation.

The vote passed, 23-5.

The House vote, possibly later this morning, will be more dramatic. Smith and other House Democratic leaders are urging Democrats who voted against the bill to support the majority and vote for the override.

If all 150 members are present, 100 votes are needed for an override. Counting all members who voted for the bill in two votes last week, plus the speaker, who did not cast a vote but may on the override, there are 97 who support the bill. Two Democrats who voted against the bill have said they would change course and support the override.

5. Fingers crossed.
Vermont would be a nice destination for an autumn wedding.

Next question: would other states recognize marriages performed in other states, as with other-sex marriages? If not, would this be the test case for the Supremes, to make same-sex marriage legal nationwide? Not in the current court, of course, but after a few Supremes are replaced.

6. IIRC, New York and Rhode Island recognize out-of-state gay marriages.
But it's worth googling to make sure.

9. WOW! so I did hear that right.
That's fantastic....I couldn't quite hear what was said so I wasn't sure. I heard him give out the nuimbers and then massive applause and a very happy demoncrat sstart to speak, so an override vote was my guess.

Yay for Democracy!

11. If it weren't for Postcards from Buster, this wouldn't have been possible.
Edited on Tue Apr-07-09 10:12 AM by Ian David
In the "infamous banned" episode of Postcards from Buster, Buster pays a visit to Sidell, Vermont during the season called "sugartime." He learns that this a season of maple syrup and mud. He spends some time at the home of a photographer his Mom once worked with and her partner (a lesbian couple) and learned that they're both Moms to their kids. Later, he goes out shopping for a bonfire. He samples Vermont maple syrup and learns about the milking of cows. He also tries his hardest to come up with the perfect Mother's Day gift for his Mom.

Thank you, Buster!

(Okay, maybe I'm overplaying Buster's importance just a little. But have you noticed that since this episode aired on WGBH, America has not been attacked by terrorists?)
