Fox News host apologizes in face of Canadian outrage

The host of a Fox News program has apologized for a segment on the Canadian military that Defence Minister Peter MacKay called "disgusting" and "crass."

A group of pundits on "Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld," which airs weekdays at 3 a.m. on Fox News, each took turns trashing Canada and its military during an episode that aired on March 17.

Gutfeld mocked Lt.-Gen. Andrew Leslie, chief of land staff, who suggested in early March that the military may need a year-long break in operations due to personnel and equipment shortages.

Norquay said he hopes Canadians who subscribe to Fox News will cancel those subscriptions and that Canadian advertisers will cancel their business with the network.

MacKay is a bit dissed off because he didn't become the head of NATO. This seems like a god sent for the neo-cons in Ottawa. They will now wrap themselves in the flag.
Seems like the opposition realises this.

Panelist Doug Benson, a comedian, replied: "I didn't even know they were in the war. I thought that's where you go when you don't want to fight. Go chill in Canada."

Benson was due to perform at an Edmonton comedy club in April, but that gig has been cancelled after threats were received about his performance.

8. Worst show on TV of any kind
I have watched it since it started from time to time just to see if it got any better but it hasn't. This stinks of a PR stunt to draw attention.

Another DU'er commented once that he knew the host from the DU'ers bartending days. Didn't know the guy was that political but he could just be making a check...it sure looks like it.

Bad TV. Awkward at best and chippy no-ones making crude downstream versions of Fox News misinformation and distortion for the bleary eyed drunk crowd to soak up before they go off to sleep.

On one segment of the show, a panel talked about Canadian lieutenant general Andrew Leslie's assertion that the military would need a one-year break from fighting in Afghanistan after Canada's commitment ends in 2011.

116 Canadian soldiers have been killed, fighting alongside US forces, in Afghanistan.

Either Gutfeld is too stupid to know this or he is deliberately maligning our ally in Afghanistan.
Either way, he is unqualified to offer an opinion.

He should resign in disgrace and apologize, in person, to the families of the fallen Canadian soldiers.
Of course, being a right-winger, he doesn't have the guts to do either.

If you want to make fun of the Canadian military, you CAN do it without denigrating their brave service.

He could have said something like, "The Canadians have been a great help in The War Against Terror. They're truly a force to be reckoned with, and the insurgents quake in terror when they hear the dogsleds topping the next sand dune."

That's exactly right. Don Cherry, on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada, has become more jingoistic and nationalistic than a NASCAR pre-race show. And I like Don Cherry.
