Source: SFGate

Sunday, March 22, 2009

(03-22) 12:15 PDT OAKLAND -- An Oakland Police officer shot Saturday during a series of gunbattles that claimed the lives of three other officers died this morning, Oakland police said today.

Motorcycle officer John Hege, 41, had been in grave condition after being shot during a traffic stop at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday. He was pronounced dead at noon today, according to Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason. Hege's fellow motorcycle officer, Sgt. Mark Dunakin, died at the scene of that shooting.

Two hours later, a SWAT team exchanged gunfire with a suspect in an apartment on 74th Avenue near Hillside Street. Two SWAT officers, Sgt. Ervin Romans and Sgt. Daniel Sakai, died in that battle as did the suspect, identified by police as Lovelle Mixon, 26.

A fifth member of the SWAT team was also shot, treated for minor injuries and released.

2. Mixon was a 6-yr. graduate of Corcoran
which is considered to be the most violent and deadly prison in California.

Just reading the rather ugly history of this prison has almost desensitized me to the unfolding tragedy of Oakland.

More of the story might help to piece together the events which cause him to violently attack police this way, but is a separate tragedy that Mixon's pent-up rage could not have been channeled out of him in some non-violent manner. A state prison that deliberately fosters violence within its confines, Corcoran being the worst example I have read about, this can only cause violence to be turned against the very society for which the state claims to protect.

Sounds like he came from a decent family and even they were surprised at the rage.
Five senseless deaths.

5. Fuck him, he should have ate that bullet
instead he murdered 4 people and still died a worthless piece of shit. Maybe he should have been a man about it and been willing to do time for whatever dirt he was into.

7. to many, Mixom is a hero I wouldn't be surprised if more police will need to keep their guard up
for a long time due to his new found iconic status in some circles they patrol.

just a hunch thats the reality check in Oakland today

9. and those people shouldn't be a part of society either
making a hero out of a killer

anyway, I doubt they can make a hero out of him-the only reason he shot the first two was because he didn't want to go back to prison

I thought the thugs could do their time

6. so the state should close the prison ?
A state prison that deliberately fosters violence within its confines.... can only cause violence to be turned against the very society for which the state claims to protect.

Maybe they should take away the weights and give them all the coke the state can legally perscribe them to use
:sarcasm:
