Russian general says mistrust in Russia-US talks on missile defense: report

MOSCOW - A top Russian general said on Monday that there was concern that the United States saw Russia as a threat, despite efforts by the two sides try to negotiate a partnership on building a joint missile defense system.

Deputy Chief of Staff General Yury Baluyevsky told the Izvestia daily that talks between the two sides were mired in mistrust.

He questioned why the United States was updating radar facilities in Greenland and Great Britain that would help guide US missiles to shoot down those coming in from enemy states.

Baluyevsky said those facilities were of no help if the United States considered its main threat to be coming from either the Middle East or North Korea.

Instead those facilities would track missiles coming over the Arctic from Russia. (snip/...)
