Japan signs oilfield development deal with Iran

Japan has signed a landmark agreement with Iran to develop one of the world's largest oilfields in a move that could rekindle tensions with the US.

Kazumasa Kusaka, Japanese energy minister, signed the basic agreement in Iran on Wednesday. It gives Japan the right to develop the controversial Azadegan oilfield for an estimated $2.8bn (?2.2bn, £1.5bn).

Tokyo's decision to press ahead with the Azadegan contract highlights its need to seek new energy sources.

was much more intense than that which had been practiced by the previous Bu$h administration in 1991.
