Army orders recall of body armor
Source: Associated Press

Audit finds that bullet-blocking plates may not provide enough protectionAudit finds that bullet-blocking plates may not provide enough protection

Army Secretary Pete Geren has ordered the recall of more than 16,000 sets of body armor following an audit that concluded the bullet-blocking plates in the vests failed testing and may not provide soldiers with adequate protection.

The audit by the office of the Defense Department inspector general, to be made public Friday and obtained by The Associated Press, faults the Army for flawed testing procedures before awarding a contract for the armor.

In a Jan. 27 letter to Inspector General Gordon Heddell, Geren said he did not agree that the plates failed the testing. He said his opinion is backed by the Pentagon's top testing director.

Hundreds of thousands of body armor sets have been manufactured over the last seven years. The vests are standard gear for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2. But why?
Think of the services he could render as a testing dummy. He could wear the armor and they could test it by shooting at him. If he lives, the armor passes.

3. There's that....even in a military prison the soldiers would not act kindly towards
someone who hurt soldiers for greed.....

I figured the general population would LOVE to meet these people....

6. Dragon Skin is the best armor known... The US Army won't allow it
Edited on Thu Jan-29-09 02:02 AM by alittlelark
LITERALLY - if a soldier is wearing it they are not covered for injuries. http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/sitrep/army-orders-soldiers-shed-dragon-skin-lose-sgli-3058.html

There was a scuffle, and inferior armor won - due to connections and (?).

12. Ollie the felon had a vest company too...his were knock off's that
got sold to PD's which later were found to be substandard. The company has probably wharped into something else sucking on the public tit.

13. Oliver North is such a slimy creature.
Caught in one of their lies, North and Fernandez claim it was a 'typo' on their prospectus. And the last line is a real hoot: "We want it to be equivalent to our own reputations, which are unblemished."

This article is definitely a keeper to show to certain wing-nuts I know, who love to hump Oliver North's leg at every opportunity.

Thanks for the link.

11. The thing with Dragon Skin is that the "scales" are basically glued together.
The tests allegedly found that the glue breaks down at high temperatures (including Iraqi summer day temperatures) and causes the armor disks to fall apart. But other aspects of the testing seemed pretty crooked, like the Army having an employee of the Interceptor body armor company conduct the Dragon Skin tests, so who knows if those findings were legitimate or not.

10. Sounds like an episode of Law and Order
episode of Law and Order. I think it was that show that tried to take the company to CEO to jail for providing bad vest. Could have been NCIS also.
