Russia Pledges Support To New U.S. Regime's Afghan Mission

(RTTNews) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev pledged his government's support to the new U.S. administration in its efforts to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan.

Addressing a joint press conference with Uzbek President Islom Karimov in Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent on Friday, he said Moscow will "allow the United States and others to carry non-military cargo across Russia for coalition forces in Afghanistan."

Most of the materials needed for U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan are currently transported through the risky routs in Pakistan.

Russia also is prepared to help international efforts to combat drug-trafficking and terrorism in Afghanistan, Medvedev added.

In an apparent change from its approach towards the Bush regime, the Russian leader hoped "the new U.S. administration will be more successful than the previous one in dealing with the Afghan settlement."
