NYT: Caroline Kennedy to withdraw Senate bid
But sources tell NBC News that there may been a miscommunication

ALBANY, New York - Caroline Kennedy planned to withdraw from consideration for the Senate seat being vacated by Hillary Clinton, The New York Times reported Wednesday. NBC News has not verified the report.

Earlier this week, Gov. David Paterson acknowledged he was considering Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for appointment to the seat. The Times cited as its source a person told of her decision.

However, A Kennedy family source told NBC's David Gregory that Caroline Kennedy has not withdrawn. Two sources hinted to NBC News that there may have been a miscommunication between Kennedy and Gov. David Paterson's office and that initial reports of her withdrawing are incorrect.

The Times reported that she called Paterson to express concerns about the health of her uncle, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, who was hospitalized Tuesday after a seizure during the inaugural luncheon. She said his health concerns were her top priority. A statement from Kennedy could come as early as Wednesday evening, the Times reported.

KO said they have a family source that says Caroline Kennedy has not dropped out and it must've been a misunderstanding with Gov. Patterson's office. Still looking for a link.

27. Do you think this may have been some kind of a trick to give
the appearance of her withdrawing to facilitate Patterson's picking another? Sorry, for the strange first post here.

Seven Questions We Hope to Have Answers for Soon
January 21, 2009 at 8:49 pm by Casey Seiler
1. First off, is Caroline Kennedy actually out? The Times story (by stalwart Albany correspondents Nick Confessore and Danny Hakim) is credited to a person told of her decision. But both the governors office and the Kennedy PR machine appear to be caught flat-footed.

2. Didnt she tell the clan first? The Daily News is reporting that Kerry Kennedy, Carolines cousin, spoke with the governor and Kennedys ostensible spokesman, Josh Isay, who claimed they didnt know anything about a pullout.

3. Did she jump or did she jump before she was pushed? The Times story states that Ms. Kennedy believed that the job was hers if she would accept it (the phrasing of that sentence changed from the initial posting to put the burden of that belief on Kennedy, as opposed to stating the govenors offer as a flat fact) but the New York Post (in a story sourced to the Post has learned) says Kennedy took a powder after learning that Gov. David Paterson wasnt going to choose her.

4. How much did her uncle play into this decision? While Ted Kennedys illness is tragic, its been something the family and the nation has known about in pretty complete detail since long before Kennedy announced her interest in Clintons seat. None but the most optimistic souls thought that his decline was reversible.

20. the latest from CNN
Sources told CNN that, as of about 8 p.m. Wednesday, she had not yet informed New York Gov. David Paterson of her decision. And as the evening wore on, confusion still surrounded the situation -- sources telling CNN they were unsure of exactly where the decision stood.

28. Latest from AP: Source tells AP: Kennedy still wants Senate seat
tells AP: Kennedy still wants Senate seat
By MICHAEL GORMLEY 19 minutes ago

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) A person familiar with Caroline Kennedy's decision says she has renewed her determination to win appointment to the U.S. Senate seat once held by her slain uncle, Sen. Bobby Kennedy.

The source says that after her surviving uncle, Sen. Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, suffered a seizure on Inauguration Day, Caroline Kennedy had misgivings about taking on the new job.

The source spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday on the condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak for Kennedy. Earlier in the day, The New York Times and New York Post reported that Kennedy had ended her monthlong bid to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton, who was confirmed as secretary of state.
