"This is truly a great day for our blessed nation! I was deeply moved and inspired by President Obama's eloquent and stirring address. Now is the time to unite as a nation behind our new president's leadership and address the challenges facing our country at home and abroad," Lieberman said in a statement issued after the event.

On Monday night, he stood before hundreds of Connecticut residents here to celebrate the inauguration and pledged to them that he would "do everything" in his power to help Obama be one of he nation's "greatest and most successful presidents." It is the same pledge, Lieberman said he has made directly to Obama three times since he won the election.

"Obviously, I supported McCain, but everybody is excited about this inauguration. This is a barrier breaker and an extraordinary moment in our history. For an African-American to take office as the president enriches and ennobles our country," Lieberman said in a recent interview.

Lieberman's detractors scoff at his most recent turnaround in support of Obama as simply self-serving.
