Rick Warren reaches out to Gene Robinson
Source: Washington Post

The Rev. Rick Warren, the conservative evangelical minister who will deliver the invocation at Barack Obama's inauguration, has extended an olive branch to Bishop V. Gene Robinson.

Robinson, an openly gay Episcopal bishop, had reacted angrily to the selection of Warren, who opposes gay marriage, calling it a "slap in the face." But then Robinson was selected this week to give the invocation at the inaugural opening ceremony at the Sunday afternoon concert on the Mall.

Today, Warren issued a statement praising Obama for selecting Robinson, saying the president-elect "has again demonstrated his genuine commitment to bringing all Americans of goodwill together in search of common ground. I applaud his desire to be the president of every citizen."

It's a short article. My "excerpt" really is the whole thing, so no need to look at the link.

This means nothing, of course, considering Warren's work to undermine the Episcopal Church. He's a slimy eel. I can't understand what Obama sees in him and his ilk.

1. Maybe PE Obama knows Warren's flock doesn't look into things real
deeply so if they see Warren saying something nice about Robinson they'll be more inclined to think queers are ok?

It's a battle for the hearts and minds of Americans and moves like this give Warren (and company) easy wins.

8. This is the same Rick Warren...
Who has helped forment dissention in the Episcopal Church by offering refuge to apostate bigots trying to abscond with church property? The same same Rick Warren who has publicly gloated about being on the Right Reverend's "attack list?" The same Rick Warren who, it was announced some weeks ago, will be standing beside Obama when the President-Elect takes the oath of office while Bishop Robinson became part of the Inaugural events seemingly as an afterthought?

Just curious.

9. Warren appears to suffer from the same ailment
as Sarah Palin.

Too long without a spotlight shining on him, and he gets needy.

This "reading out" is an affront. Robinson should ignore it. This is Warren taking "the high road." Fuck him.

10. I've come to terms with the Rick Warren thing
It's not about gay civil rights so much as it's about African-American civil rights.

50 years ago, Rick Warren would have been a hick bigot preaching against miscegenation. Today, he's Obama's lapdog, sharing the stage with Joseph Lowery.

And it's his bigotry against gays, for exactly the same reasoning used by the bigots back then, that proves this.

I can get behind that.

11. So, Warren considers himself an American of goodwill?
How delusional.

He is actually so dangerous precisely because he presents himself as such a nice, reasonable guy. People will judge him by his persona, rather than by his acts and ideas.

His record needs to be brought up over and over again.

13. As good a time as any to repost this:

Until Mr. Warren issues a statement of apology for the hatred that he has actively promoted, I can't trust that any "Olive Branch" he extends won't be a trick to distract someone so they can be stabbed in the back.

I guess that's just what bigots do... pick a group, make a blanket statement about it with a bad attribute a few may have, spew their hate publicly and continue on their way, rinse and repeat.
