Dozens die in New Year's club fire in Bangkok

BANGKOK - At least 53 people were killed and more than 100 others injured in a fire which broke out in a Bangkok nightclub where revelers were celebrating the New Year, police said.

Thanat Wongsanga, deputy chief of the Thong Lor police station near the heart of the Thai capital, said the cause of the blaze at the Santika club on Ekkamai, a street popular with Thai and foreign partygoers, had not yet been determined.

Local media said an electrical fault was probably to blame. Various domestic media outlets put the death toll at between 50 and 55 dead.

Seems like something like this happens about every year.

and this is supposed to be an upscale nightclub?

I'd hate to see what passes for one that isn't so upscale in that country.

edit: the fire at the Station nightclub killed over 100 in Rhode Island in 2003, so I guess the standards in the US aren't that much better in these kind of places.
