Australian beaches closed after shark attack
Source: Australasia World News

Sydney - Several beaches in Perth, Western Australia, were closed Sunday after a large shark was sighted by a helicopter searching for a missing man believed to have been attacked by the creature the previous day. Authorities said the helicopter and search boats found only pieces of a wetsuit worn by Brian Guest, 51, who disappeared while snorkelling for crabs at a beach south of the city on Saturday.

A large shark was spotted and a witness reported seeing blood in the water at the place where Guest was last seen, ABC Radio reported.

Police said no attempt would be made to hunt down the shark in accordance with the wishes of the missing man's family.

The national AAP news agency reported that Guest told angling website forums in 2004 and 2005 that he did not believe in killing sharks.

3. Good of the family...
not to go after the shark and possibly cull(kill) a whole lot of sharks that had nothing to do with it.
That shark was just being him/herself.

7. Doesn't really work that way.
Generally attacks on humans are not motivated by desire to feed, except in the case of "mistaken identity" attacks where a surfer is mistaken for a seal or something. Attempts to feed are generally broken off after one exploratory bite as humans do not have enough fat in their bodies to replenish the energy expended in the attack.

Also, large sharks don't tend to stay in one area long (with the exceptions of certain seal rookeries, whale migratory areas and other annual feeding sites where food is temporarily plentiful) since they'll quickly eliminate their own food supply if they do, so chances are pretty good that by the time you get boats out the shark in question has moved on.

9. I've heard humans don't taste very good to sharks.
So a lot of times they leave after tasting an appendage. (If the appendage is your head, you're in deep shit though.)

11. We could volunteer someone.
When I was in the Amazon they told us that the anaconda would never bother a group of people swimming, but they might bother a human in the water alone. I'm not sure how they knew the anaconda's preferences. What if he decided to dine with friends?

17. Ok now seriously? FUCK the ocean!
Any fish that can be spotted from a flying helicopter can have that beach all to himself.
