Iraqi official says he's quitting over shoe-tosser

By QASSIM ABDUL-ZAHRA
Associated Press Writer

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraq's parliament speaker announced his resignation Wednesday after a parliamentary session descended into chaos as lawmakers argued about whether to free a journalist who threw his shoes at President George W. Bush.

The speaker, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, has threatened to resign before and has been suspended for embarrassing the prime minister with erratic behavior.

On Wednesday, after arguments erupted among lawmakers over the fate of the journalist Muntadhar al-Zeidi, the speaker said: "I have no honor leading this parliament and I announce my resignation."

Al-Zeidi's family went to the Central Criminal Court expecting to attend a court hearing for him, said his brother, Dhargham. He added they were told the investigative judge went to see him in jail and that they should return in eight days.

1. It's always amazed me that Politicians can "Dish it out" but go into ....
a Frenzy state when a private citizen does something that should have been done all the while...

I've heard of Politicians (several times) getting into fist-fights with one another..

2. He was no "tosser."
He almost pegged him good. He was a pitcher, not a tosser.

4. So, is Mahmoud pro-shoe thrower or anti-shoe thrower? Either way, who told him
he was supposed to lead Parliament for personal honor? He's supposed to do it to serve his country. Maybe that's a cultural difference. Oh, how I wish we had never invaded.

5. I wonder
if the AP changed the content of their original reporting from when you posted it?

"An investigative judge visited al-Zeidi in his jail cell earlier this week and the family was told to return to court next week, according to the journalist's brother, Dhargham al-Zeidi."

I also wonder from this as to whether the family was allowed to see him at all or told to come back? If he were tortured or beaten this might give time for the bruises to heal.

Thanks for the thread, kpete.
