Cake request for 3-year-old Hitler namesake denied (ShopRite says no-Walmart says yes)
Source: AP

EASTON, Pa. (AP) — The father of 3-year-old Adolf Hitler Campbell, denied a birthday cake with the child's full name on it by one New Jersey supermarket, is asking for a little tolerance. Heath Campbell and his wife, Deborah, are upset not only with the decision made by the Greenwich ShopRite, but with an outpouring of angry Internet postings in response to a local newspaper article over the weekend on their flare-up over frosting.

"I think people need to take their heads out of the cloud they've been in and start focusing on the future and not on the past," Heath Campbell said Tuesday in an interview conducted in Easton, on the other side of the Delaware River from where the family lives in Hunterdon County, N.J.

"There's a new president and he says it's time for a change; well, then it's time for a change," the 35-year-old continued. "They need to accept a name. A name's a name. The kid isn't going to grow up and do what (Hitler) did."

The Campbells ultimately got their cake decorated at a Wal-Mart in Pennsylvania, Deborah Campbell said. About 12 people attended the birthday party on Sunday, including several children who were of mixed race, according to Heath Campbell.

"If we're so racist, then why would I have them come into my home?" he asked.

The Campbells' other two children also have unusual names: JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell turns 2 in a few months and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie Campbell will be 1 in April.

Heath Campbell, left, with his wife Deborah and son Adolph Hitler, 3, pose in Easton, Pa.,, Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008. Deborah and her husband Heath attempted to by a birthday cake for their son at a near by ShopRite supermarket in Greenwich, N.J. and were told that the store would not inscribe Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler on the cake. The Campbell's also have two daughters, JoyceLynn Aryan Nation and Honszlynn Hinler Jeannie.

Otto's been my nickname since high school. I love that name. My mother-in-law decided to name our dog Otto also, and Otto was the best dog anyone could ever hope for. Otto's a great name.

152. Otto is a wonderful name
My Uncle Otto was one of the coolest people ever! I spent a month with him and my Aunt Darlene during the summer between my Freshman and Sophomore year of high school. He had such a great sense of humor and a work ethic that I couldn't match. I loved that man dearly.

Sadly, he passed away in 1999. But I will never forget that summer.

Thanks for taking me for a walk down memory lane, bittersweet as it might be!

2. UPDATE-this was the third Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler cake that Walmart has made
Holland Township man names son after Adolf Hitler
http://www.lehighvalleylive.com/warren-county/index.ssf...

Karen Meleta, a ShopRite spokeswoman, said the grocer tries to meet customer requests but rejects those deemed inappropriate. "We believe the request to inscribe a birthday wish to Adolf Hitler is inappropriate," she said.

The grocer offered to make a cake with enough room for the Campbells to write their own inscription. But the Campbells refused, saying they would have a cake made at the Wal-Mart in Lower Nazareth Township. The Campbells say Wal-Mart made cakes for Adolf's first two birthdays.

A spokeswoman for Wal-Mart said the store won't put anything illegal or profane on a cake but thinks it's important to respect the views of customers and employees.

"Our No. 1 priority in decorating cakes is to serve the customer to the best of our ability," Anna Taylor, the spokeswoman, said from Bentonville, Ark.

4. UPDATE2-have swatiskas in each room of their house, expect no problems with names at school
The Campbells have swastikas in each room of their home, the rented half of a one-story duplex just outside Milford, a borough in Hunterdon County. They say they aren't racists but believe races shouldn't mix.

The Campbells said they wanted their children to have unique names and didn't expect the names to cause problems. Despite the cake refusal, the Campbells said they don't expect the names to cause problems later, such as when the children start school.

57. I used to have that pic up on a bulletin board in my office
adding to the joke itself is that my wife's family is from Roanoke which made it doubley funny (but not any less sad)

When we were deciding on names for our daughter (before we knew the sex even) every name had to pass the "playground rule"-that being that we sat and thought about any potential twisting of the name that kids might do. The potential "John Jacob" was tossed (my wife had never heard it) because of the John Jacob Jingleheimerschmidt song. Being around parents of kids generally our daughter's age I hear girls with names all the time that make me cringe-did they really give their daughter a stripper name? crosses my mind often. Adolf Hitler or even Adolf is not even in the realm of possibility. :eyes:

11. UPDATE4- Both are on Social Security due to "disablities"
Edited on Tue Dec-16-08 11:06 PM by underpants
Disabilities, the couple says, have left both out of work: Heath Campbell can't landscape or pump gas because he has emphysema, and Deborah can't waitress because she has a bad back. They live on Social Security payments.

these are the only options?

In the foyer, Heath Campbell, who said he has German ancestry and a relative who fought for the SS, took off boots he said were worn by a Nazi solider named Daniel.

He laid them next to a skull with a swastika on its forehead, the first of dozens of swastikas seen by the Campbells' rare guests.

There are swastikas on walls, on jackets, on the freezer and on a pillow. The family car had swastikas, Heath Campbell said, until New Jersey's Department of Children and Families told him they could endanger the children.

The swastikas, Heath Campbell said, are symbols of peace and balance. He considers them art.

77. OK, wait.
SHE'S on disability because she has a bad back? I'm not a parent but, correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't popping out babies and chasing them around (toddlers) and having to pick them up, over and over throughout the day, constitute a considerable amount of strain on your back?

This drives me crazy, I know SO many people on disability that are obviously scamming the system and don't really need it and SO many people who can't get it that SHOULD get it.

111. No comment on whether this particular woman is disabled
...but there are a large variety of bad backs.

I received a partial permanent disability settlement from worker's comp because of an injury to my back in 1985 - and I could pop out babies, chase them around, and pick them up until the cows came home (or - as I regularly do - carry 50 lbs of scuba gear on my back, or an 80 lb bag of salt from my car trunk to the softener).

What I can't do is hold a 5 lb bag of flour at arms length, or sit in any chair designed as a stackable chair for longer than 15 minutes. If I do something either of those (or something else that aggravates my back), do not immediately take medication (which is both emotionally and physically depressing) and stay flat on my back for a number of days until the spasm has passed I am in a world of hurt for months. For a long time, I avoided taking care of myself because of the ugly stares I received from people who thought I was faking it when I asked for a special chair at conferences (or sat on the floor), because it didn't look like - and I didn't move like - anything was wrong with me.

Now I have made peace with people giving me dirty looks because I have come to realize that the consequences of pretending to be normal to avoid embarrassment are far worse than the temporary feelings associated with being looked at as if I am the scum of the earth. But it would be a lot easier if people remembered that a lot of disabilities - including some back injuries - are invisible. Just because someone can do things you would not expect them to be able to do based on what you perceive someone with a "bad back" should be able to do doesn't necessarily mean that they are scamming the system. In retrospect, the payment I received was far too little compensation for the 30 + years of pain I have endured since then or the 30 + years of pain I still (with any luck) have to look forward to.

8. UPDATE3-from another longer article on it
The Campbells said they wanted their children to have unique names and didn't expect the names to cause problems. Despite the cake refusal, the Campbells said they don't expect the names to cause problems later, such as when the children start school.

Robert M. Gordon, a clinical psychologist in Allentown, said the names would hurt the children.

"Certainly society is going to be hostile towards those kids, especially when they go to school," Gordon said.

More than that, he said, the children would be harmed by their parents' views.

"By the time they get to school, they will already have been damaged," Gordon said. "Any parent that would impose such horrific names on their children is mentally ill, and they would be affecting their children from the day they were born. Only a crazy person would do that."

I always hated that f'ing name so much, as soon as had a well developed nickname, I legally changed the sucker. I now cringe when I hear other people with the same first name. I should have been allowed to change it earlier. That combined with my adopted last name sounded so dorky, it's a wonder I wasn't beat up in school.

They did it because they wanted controversy. Wal-Mart took the bait. Being that
Was-Mart in a Southern state, are we really surprised?

I'm not saying that racism doesn't exist in the North, but those people in the South seem to be much more comfortable expressing it openly than those in the North.

First of all, whenever his classmates see him, they'll be friendly. They'll raise their palms and say, "Hi, Hitler!"

Second, when he grows up, he will automatically have all kinds of great slogans for his businesses.

Hitler's Steakhouse. "Steaks the way you want them - rare, medium, or Auschwitz!"

Hitler's Aerobics. "Fat, lazy, ugly? We'll march you into shape!"

Hitler's Heating. "Specialist in gas pipes!"

Hitler's Cleaners. "Discounts on Brown and Black Shirts!"

And for those of you who remember the Third Reich's spy chief Admiral Doenetz, he could open up Admiral Donuts. "They call them long johns...we call them U-boats!"

94. thats slightly off on what he said i think(as much as i hate to defend him)
As the story states

He said he was raised not to avoid people of other races but not to mix with them socially or romantically. But he said he would try to raise his children differently.

"Say he grows up and hangs out with black people. That's fine, I don't really care," he said. "That's his choice."

He was raised the way you said, and he will try to raise his children differently, to me that sounds like a good thing.

Can't say i agree with his choice of names tho

The Campbells have swastikas in each room of their home, the rented half of a one-story duplex just outside Milford, a borough in Hunterdon County. They say they aren't racists but believe races shouldn't mix.

I don't believe his crap--you don't pick names like those and decorate your house and body with racist signs just because they are "art".

Edited on Thu Dec-18-08 05:02 PM by Rob H.
I'm no neo-Nazi, but even I know that when Hitler's Germany used the swastika it faced the other way. Wonder if the mail-order place he ordered that shit from will give him his money back. :sarcasm:

Reminds me of a story a friend told me about a racist skinhead who went to have a Nazi slogan tattooed on his forehead--he didn't know the German phrase was actually "Heil, Hitler!" so he wound up with "Hi, Hitler!" on his noggin for all the world to see. At least he did the world a favor by literally marking himself as a moran. :P

Seems improbable that there would be yet ANOTHER racist knuckledragger who thought it was "Hi, Hitler!" but don't underestimate morans, I guess. I recall the story all these years later about this other nutjob:
February 13, 1994--Macon (Ga) Telegraph

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL--A white supremacist wants permission to wear a Ku Klux Klan robe and be called ``Hi Hitler'' at his murder trial. Donald Leroy Evans is accused of strangling Ira Jean Smith, a Fort Lauderdale prostitute, in 1985. In motions filed Friday, Evans asked to be allowed to wear the KKK robe, and for his name to be changed on all court documents to ``the honorable and respected name of Hi Hitler.'' According to courthouse employees, Evans thought Adolf Hitler's followers said ``Hi Hitler'' rather than ``Heil Hitler.''

120. It also says that he's a holocaust denier
that idolizes hitler. Huh? So what else did hitler do of note? Lost the biggest war in history? Set germanys economic recovery and world opinion back decades? He did build the autobahn I guess.

So he either worships a guy who he believes was a failure in almost everyway (except road building, and Ike did better there). Or he's lying and just refuses to admit that he supports the holocaust.

Not that I really need to elaborate on the point that he's an idiot.

I hope the teachers withold their disgust from the classroom and vent it at parent-teacher conferences with the kids parents.

I don't blame the store that refused to print the name on the cake, and I don't blame WalMart for wanting to make money. I'm neutral on the business end of it.

They are racists. The aryan nations says they're not against other races either - they just don't want the races to mix. That group has assumed a sugar coating of racism. They've been doing it for years. This guy is only parroting back the aryan nations diatribe. Unfortunately the newspaper didn't let him go on with the rest of what he believes to show everyone that yes, he's a die hard racist.

I mean come on, he's named his kids after people who kill other races.

117. Assholes...
Obviously they are assholes for their back-assward beliefs, but whatever, people are allowed to be morons. However, using their kids in such way is unacceptable. Ehhn, although I guess we can't be taking kids away for this.. I suspect if they're doing this then there are many other things that might be used to save these kids...

I also find it 'amusing' that they try to 'hide' their actual racism by using some weird explanations. I guess it shows that they know they're moron.

They are highly racist but sugarcoat it. This guy is only parroting back what the Aryan nations says. He can't think for himself.

To name his kids after people who kill other races shows how tolerant he is. Really, what you're seeing is the modern spin on racism that the aryan nations is spewing - and has been for a decade. They've said only what the aryan nations says. These two are mindless followers of a racist movement.

134. I don't know why the kids can't be taken away. Money is being spent on
tattoos rather than raising kids, and that money is disability money.

If the parents were buying crack with the money instead, nobody would argue the kids are in danger.

Being raised by demented folk is just as dangerous as crack - maybe more, because it goes on 24 hours a day, whereas at some point, you rest from crack...wish I was being sarcastic.

139. Actually, the kids look well-nourished and are clean and dressed properly.

On what grounds do you want to take them away... because of their names? That's quite the slippery slope argument.

Don't think I'd prefer to be with crack parents if I were a child today. These people may be racist but chances are they won't burn their children on a stove top in some delusional tweeker rage, or sell them for drug money.

for themselves?

Here's the official site.

Oh, and for what it's worth - Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Ted Bundy, John Wayne Gacy all looked well-nourished and clean and dressed properly.

Pretty low standard you've got there.

145. You want to take children away from their parents because of their names?
Their middle names actually? Where does that end, and who says what's offensive?

Stalin, Hitler, and Bundy grew up in very religious households. Want to take all children away from their fundamentalist families? Obviously religion breeds violence. (You forgot Dahmer btw. He was well nourished and grew up in a fundie family too.)

Gacy, Hitler and Bundy had abusive father figures. Social workers have a hard time enough keeping up with burgeoning abuse cases, and you want to add to that, children with offensive names? :)

There's no indication these children are being beaten or tortured in the way that children of parents with substance abuse problems often are. And they always have the choice to refute their parents' beliefs when they're old enough. Totally different than growing up in a crack addicted household. Wouldn't wish that on any child.
