South Carolina governor to Bush: Auto aid ‘great mistake’
BY JUSTIN HYDE • FREE PRESS WASHINGTON STAFF • DECEMBER 15, 2008

WASHINGTON – A leading Republican governor urged President George W. Bush today to reject any aid for Detroit’s automakers, calling it a “very great mistake.”

The Bush administration is working on a rescue plan for General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC that will likely draw from the $15 billion still available under the first half of the $700 billion financial industry bailout Congress approved in October. Any deal is expected to draw some terms from a $14-billion pact the White House negotiated with congressional Democrats that was blocked in the Senate last week.

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who’s been an outspoken critic of government spending in his state and nationally, sent a letter to Bush on Monday saying using the financial industry money “would open the floodgates to federal monies for every distressed industry across this country – and there will be many in this economic slowdown.”

“I believe we are at a tipping point in moving from a market-based economy to a politically-based economy, wherein one’s success can be determined not by good decisions and hard work, but by the size of one’s voice and connection to Washington,” Sanford said.

1. What's with these assholes?
$700 billion to the banking industry, but not $14 billion to the automakers?

4. ...
Oh Yeah...tell that to Governor Granholm of Michigan, I am sure she will agree :sarcasm:

If South Carolina doesn't want the govt to bail out the autos, then the Federal govt should cut all "federal monies" to this douchebag's state.
Recessions and total economic collapse are fine...as long as it is in another state, right governor ass wipe? God I hate the South.

6. "Market-based economy." What bullshit.
Yeah, that's what all those K Street lobbying firms are fighting for - so their clients get no special favors from government, and instead assure the virgin purity of the "market-based economy."

8. Sanford has been the
worst governor in my memory and it goes back a long time. If there is anyone in the US that could make Bush look good in some governing ways it is Sanford. Tax cuts are all he knows. The budget for this year has already been cut with a meat ax and there is another bigger round coming. He is good at shifting the tax load from the rich to the working people (property taxes used for schools cut and put on sales]
And for you who hate the south please remember there are at least some of us are democrats who are living under the worst president ever and the worst state governor and still have to suffer with Jim DeMint and Lindsey Graham. I am very proud of my representative, John Sprat.

9. "one’s success can be determined . . . by the size of one’s voice and connection to Washington"
Mark Sanford is right to worry about that, if he's talking about the last eight years, oil companies, and Halliburton.

They don't even pay their own way and take in more of our tax dollars than they contribute. It would be great to get these freeloaders off of our backs. The majority of them speak some foreign language that I can't even understand. The have all the elements that H. G. Wells that are needed to form a nation, the same fucked up religion, language and basic flat earth philosophy.
