Minister 'quits' over Mumbai attacks

Indian Home Minister Shivraj Patil has submitted his resignation taking "moral responsibility" for the Mumbai attacks that killed nearly 200 people.

The move comes amid growing pressure on the Indian government to explain why it was unable to prevent the strikes.

There is no word on whether Mr Patil's resignation has been accepted.

The three-day long siege has increased tensions with Pakistan after allegations the gunmen had Pakistani links. Islamabad denies involvement.

Mr Patil wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh "owning moral responsibility" for the attacks, the BBC's Sanjoy Majumder, in Delhi, says.

More resignations may follow, our correspondent adds.

a lot of politicians say they take responsibility, but rarely walk the walk. I respect this guy for manning up and facing the consequences.

Shivraj Patil didn't do the honorable thing. If he wanted to do that, he wouldn't have taken this job after not winning his seat in the house of representatives four+ years back. He was selected becasue the "big madam" Sonia Gandhi liked him. She was upset with his performance and hence this "resignation" drama

12. Your post echoes what the Indian news reports are saying

When they first reported his resignation last night, they went thru a list of all the 9 or 10 terror attacks/bombs that have happened under his watch...with Mumbai being "the last straw".
Plus, they added, with India's general election coming up in 4 months, the party in power is pretty much forcing the resignations that we have seen and will see in the next few days/weeks in hopes of their party being re-elected in 4 months.
I don't follow their politics, just reporting what I have seen on the live stream reports from CNN-IBN. They do a good job of simplifying the political fall out that we are seeing happening.
There was no praise for the home minister who "resigned". It was more of a "his leaving office is LONG overdue" and they reported he was shut out of a high level security meeting the day before he resigned.

Next rumored "resignation" (per news) is their Chief Minister.

MUMBAI (Reuters) – The fallout from a three-day rampage that killed nearly 200 people in Mumbai threatened on Sunday to unravel India's improving ties with Pakistan and prompted the resignation of India's security minister.

New Delhi said it was raising security to a "war level" and had no doubt of a Pakistani link to the attacks, which unleashed anger at home over the intelligence failure and the delayed response to the violence that paralyzed India's financial capital.(snip)


Newspaper commentaries blasted politicians for failing to prevent the attacks and for taking advantage of its fallout before voting in Delhi on Saturday and national polls due by May.

MUMBAI: Maharastra deputy chief minister R R Patil, who was in the cross hairs in the wake of the Mumbai terror attacks, resigned on Monday.

"I have submitted my resignation letter to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. I have gone by my conscience and decided to take this step," Patil said.

The Congress leadership is annoyed with Patil, particularly becasue of his insensitive remark on Saturday where he sought to play down the enormity of jihadi atrocity against Mumbai, almost likening it to a routine law and order incident which is common in any big city. On Saturday, Patil had described the Mumbai carnage as a "small incident" that "can happen in big cities."
