Dell plans to shift more work to Asia
Source: Economic Times India

22 Nov 2008, 0154 hrs IST, ET Bureau

MUMBAI: Since the beginning of the slowdown, IT firms have been maintaining that India will benefit if firms try to cut costs. Now, there is
evidence that it actually may be happening.

In a conference call, Dell’s Asia-Pacific and Japan head Steve Felice said there is an opportunity to shift more work to Asia and Dell will do it. In its third-quarter results announced late on Thursday, the US-based PC manufacturer’s tight rein on costs helped it post better earnings despite a sales slump.

Dell has invested heavily in its India and China factories. From Bangalore, it has built systems management capability and software for enterprise activity. While in China, it does design work and R&D. In addition, in Malaysia’s Cyberjaya, it does software development. “Our intention is to grow these,” said Mr Felice. Elsewhere, Dell has announced job cuts.

“We don’t just service Asia out of these locations. They have worked well globally to the extent that there are opportunities to shift more work to Asia arise, we will do it... We are happy with the performance of these facilities to serve global needs and will continue to invest them depending on market conditions,” Mr Felice said.

15. That critique was insightful
Wait! no it wasn't!

Dell reported stronger than expected earnings this quarter, and though earnings actually took a dip, they did not fall as low as the market might have allowed. In the end, Dell's consumer PC revenue jumped 10%, earnings per share on Dell stock gained 9 points, and the company was ranked the #2 computer manafacturer on the 2008 Forbes 500.

It did its job, but I always had problems.. same uncle got my sister hers.. her problems were even worse... then the wonderful company fired my uncle to save money. I know bottom lines don't care for a man raising 2 of his own children and 2 adopted children.. but one day, perhaps a bottom line won't matter as much as the person real value.

6. So let me get this straight
If our government tries to subsidize our auto industry to keep them afloat the WTO might investigate us for violating rules governing trade, but if India subsidizes their manufacturing sector so they can lure US companies to move production away from the US and into those Indian subsidized factories, thats not a violation of trade rules?

And we wonder why our workers feel like they keep getting fucked by both the US government and well as US corporations?

Its based on a damn lie, and it assumes that any company owned by any Mormon is darkened, or of less value. It's a witch hunt mentality, and it sucks. There are right-wing conservative asshat mormons, and there are liberal/progressive mormons. You can't tell, just by looking.

27. I have to say I've owned two Dells. A desktop that served me
diligently for five years; and a little Inspiron 12 inch laptop that I've had for three and I take it everywhere. Small and I can tuck it in my purse, not a minute's trouble, got an extended battery for free and it does five hours.

However I refuse to buy Dell anymore because I will NOT talk to someone from India, and I want to support American made so I bought my last desktop from an American owned California company, and that computer was cost effective and has worked great as well and when I called their customer service I could understand what they said.

24. well, I have a Dell computer, and although I'm satisfied with its performance . . .
I am completely dissatisfied with their customer service -- which, as far as I can tell, is located in India . . .

I recently had to purchase a new video card for my machine . . . nothing complicated, I just wanted the same card that came with the computer when I bought it . . . for some reason, their computerized ordering system wouldn't take my order, so I had to call to place the order . . .

I won't bore you with the details, but after I finally got to speak to someone (a wait of about 20 minutes), I was connected to a woman who I could barely understand . . . and apparently she could barely understand me . . . I tried my best to be patient and repeat everything as many times as necessary, and even apologized for not being able to understand her . . . but the whole experience was draining, extremely frustrating, and a huge waste of my time . . .

I finally did get the part, but only after the wrong one was sent and I had to return it . . . which required yet another endless conversation between two people who could barely comprehend each other . . .

at one time, Dell was noted for their excellent customer service, but those days are long gone . . . they may be saving tons of money by offshoring, but they're losing a lot of customers like me who can no longer put up with this foolishness . . . I don't know what my next computer will be, but I do know it won't be a Dell . . .

25. Dell is the PC Equivalent of Enron
They even share that same logo.

I swore off Dell when I had a computer fail due to Capacitor Plague, which led to memory failure as well.

After 8 hours on the phone, I finally got someone who could make a decision as to replacing a memory stick.

They offer a lifetime warranty on memory from Dell, but why don't they warrant the same memory that ships with your computer? Because it's scavenged from older machine returned by disgruntled customers, that's why.

In 2005 they moved their entire customer service division to call centers in India. Average call time 45 minutes. I would how much that saved them...

Well, it saved them nothing, and drove customers with a soul away to HP, which is hardly any better than Dell, but what can you do when everything is made in China?

I don't doubt that someday Americans will have a hard time viewing their photos stored on DVD's due to lack of capable equipment, or the built in obsolescence of todays software and the destruction of standards we have come to depend on.

DVD's are going away, in comes BluRay. More obsolescence, more wasted space, more resources and computing power needed to drive the damn software and devices. The whole industry has gone the way of the Car Dealer method, and we are losing our choices.

As a side note, I don't buy your line that it took you 8 hours on the phone to get a stick of RAM. Thats a bullshit story. Sorry!

29. Hell I'm surprised anyone is shocked over this
It's a little late for outrage. Dell was one of the first major outsourcers. Hell, I'm surprised they have any jobs left in the US!

I've never been terribly impressed with their products. I'm using a laptop of their's right now, provided by work. It's not bad, but the battery life was terrible. Their desktops are almost exclusively used at work. Some decent...others not so much. If I were to though, I probably wouldn't buy one of their computers myself.

Michael Dell asks workers to consider taking up to five days off without pay. (I told you so)

In a memo Monday, Dell asked employees throughout the company to consider taking off as many as five days without pay over the next three months. In addition, he said, the company would institute a hiring freeze, scale back some projects, offer voluntary severance packages and cut many of its contract workers.

33. Little Story on why India and the ilk suck
I pick on india but ireland is a problem too. India just looks and sounds different. People aren't as bothered by a guy with an irish lilt fucking them out of a job. They kill the jobs we need to train people here.

I write code for machine controllers around manufacturing processes. Basically a machine figures out what it has in 3 dimensions and then does something to it. Cuts it, bends it, whatever.

The equipment and controllers are multimillion dollar configurations. So I am in Brazil setting up a line for an aircraft manufacturer. Millions of dollars worth of machines to handle aluminum to high tolerances.

Machine interface is transposing input from metric to english units. Code catches it and halts. This is burned on the board problem. Probably got fried in shipping, who knows. Need a new one. $1000 on a million dollar project.

Call the vendor who is US BASED with the customer and get BANGALORE. Brazilians were not impressed, Bangalore wants to run through the script of testing. So we have 4 engineers 2 electrical arguing with some parrot about stuff we already did. That is the problem. SO after explaining to the other guys that screaming at them does not help, we get out part.

Went back and dropped that vendor the next week. US company loses to german company.

and most enterprise support.

39. try tigerdirect.com in Florida
they will custom build a computer for you. I have heard nothing but good things about this place and will likely get my next desktop from them built with Windows XP Pro. on it hopefully.

The last computer I bought was a Toshiba laptop (about 6 months ago). I am fairly impressed with it (far better than a Lenovo or a DELL that is for sure). I have no problems to report since the purchase of this laptop (great sound and solidly made).

Try tigerdirect.com if you have specific needs. They can and will meet them at a reasonable price, I know that much.

41. I won't buy Dell because of the massive amounts of money Dell gives the GOP.

Don't care how good their computers are.

And I got my most recent computer from Tigerdirect. And I'm very happy with it so far.

Here's Michael Dell's contribution list, BTW.
