India continues to be the leading country to send maximum number of students to the United States for pursuing higher education for the seventh consecutive year surpassing China, an official report said.

India has retained the first slot for the seventh year in succession with the number of Indian students in the US increasing by 13 per cent in 2007-08 to reach 94,563, according to the Open Doors report published by the Institute of International Education with support from the US Department of State's Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs.

The total number of foreign students pursuing studies and research activities in the US reached an all time high of 6,23,805 in 2007-08 session, marking an increase of seven per cent over the previous year, the report released today said.

The new enrolments were up by 10 per cent in the colleges and universities in the US, the report said. The increase in students is attributed to the outreach efforts carried out by the Department of State in key international markets including India, China, Vietnam and Brazil .

20. You're right. The more paying students the more money the universities have to hire

professors, janitors, accountants, etc.

Plus I believe that international students pay full tuition, not lower in-state or other reduced tuitions. Any move to limit or eliminate foreign college students would worsen college's financial problems and make it more difficult for American students to get the financial aid that many need.

As you say, it is true that this is the reverse of the outsourcing of service industry jobs to India. In the college education, we are receiving money from India for providing a service rather than India receiving our money for providing a service to us. Viewed in that light, the more Indian students we attract here the better we are doing.

Hell, Hillary helped start the "Friends of India", laughingly calling herself "The Senator from Punjab" and assuring Indian Nationals that there would be no "slowdown" of American jobs for Indians in her administration.

It's one of the major reasons I refused to back her in the primaries. The Clintons, in my view, are nothing if not "compromised".

Have a friend from India, he came over to help his Uncle with the Restaruant, then his brother came over to help with the restaurant, they both left,(breaking the visa requirements). My friend was able to maintain his Visa, his brother was going to be departed (out of Oakland area actually).. so they drove him up to Canada, he came back over and lives in the USA illegally.. and it was easy for him and he has a J O B.... I don't be he does. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Chalsa (WB), Dec 18: Less number of American students were coming to India for studies because of the "inordinate delay" in getting Indian visas, US embassy public affairs minister counsellor Larry Schwartz claimed here today.

"For some reason or the other, may be bureaucratic process, American students are not getting Indian visas while Indian students are getting US visas and all help to study in America," Schwartz said, addressing a three-day conference for Fulbright scholars in South Asia. "This year 30 American students could not avail Indian visas as they were issued very late," he said.

Another reason for less students coming here was the "interference" by Indian authorities in the choice of subjects of US students, Schwartz said.

He said delays in issuing Indian visas was "unfortunate", especially when indo-us ties were getting stronger. The Fulbright, would shortly open a centre at R.E.C at Silchar in Assam soon to cover more areas in the north-eastern region to help more students get opportunities to study in America, he added.

I have the same thing to ask.... I thought our education was so bad in this country... why are they coming here for shit education???? Guess our college education system ain't as bad as they say.

Also to add... fine, for every overseas student, the college/university must provide a full scholarship for a USA student.

Interesting that India is not offering our students the same freedoms to study what they wish and are bogged down in visa issues.

My thought of course is the job offers after graduation for these students are one of their goals, to have a job in the USA... no, no, no I do not think so. I think things are CHANGING!

I also think it is high time that the laws be changed about who can buy companies/businesses in our country. Interesting that you can not buy a business in many overseas countries.. but boy, they can come here and buy up our businesses.... NEEDS TO STOP! Ohhh I see another email to change.gov

why did you put "studying" in quotes? Did it seem like he/she didn't get a good education over there?

Not trying to be a smartass, I really am curious about the quality over there. We have a lot of Indian students in my grad program and from what I've seen they seem to place all the emphasis on memorization and fail at real world applications and critical thinking.

Technically, she would have been in 11th grade here,
but there was no "high school equivalent in India,
so she was sent to a University there.

The college was an accredited one and HIGHLY
rated in India.

She says that "teaching" involved an instructor
reading a book out loud in a lecture hall.

Most Indian students had private tutors and
attended only sporadically. Also, half the time
the teachers never showed up.

This, added to the fact that her host parents
refused to provide reliable transportation to
and from the University, soon caused my daughter
to have a "so what" attitude toward her "studies".

In India, skipping school is called "bunking",
and she began identifying herself on her facebook
page as "Queen of the Bunkers"...

Not much I could do about it from 7,000 miles away....

She has had to double up on her credits and do summer
school to make up for her "lost" year.

She would not give back her year in India for any amount
of money, though...

She LOVED India.
