Wildfire threatens Los Angeles power supply -mayor

LOS ANGELES, Nov 15 (Reuters) - A fast-moving wildfire in suburban Los Angeles is a threat to the city's power supply, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said on Saturday.

The fire, concentrated in the Los Angeles foothill suburb of Sylmar, could hit transmission lines that bring electrical power to Los Angeles.

"The fire is threatening the power of the city of Los Angeles," Villaraigosa said. "We may have to move to rolling blackouts." He urged residents to conserve power to avoid outages.

Power supply ok now. Freeways reopening.

Flareup in the Newhall Pass has got the air pretty much unbreathable again tonight. Sigh.

5. I found, Kestrel, when I went to pick up my son in the east valley, it was much smokier...

... and yet, out in the Canoga Park-ish area where I am, there's been more ash!

7. This morning when I went in to work it got smokier as I went west.

6. We're about halfway between the Sylmar and Anaheim Hills fires...

You can smell em for sure, and there is ash raining down slowly like giant snowflakes. Except the ash is burnt-up million dollar homes. We are not really in danger from the fire but we will soon lose power, probably. We are going to get gauze face masks like they wear in China because breathing is hard. We will mmost likely stay inside. I'm pragmatic; in the unlikely event we kiss our asses goodbye, it won't bother me too much cause I'm 54 and I have done and seen a lot, and my vote helped put Barack Obama in the White House.

Oh, and fuck Halliburton. The timing is suspiciously convenient.

I can't wait for Cheney to go back to Wyoming, where the men are men- and sheep are nervous.

8. Well, dammit, now they are showing on tv that flareup in the Newhall Pass

and they have those big high-tension power lines and support structures silhouetted by HUGE FLAMES.

We don't need a frickin' power outage with tomorrow's projected 100 and single-digit humidity. And I really need this smoke to ease up - my chest hurts.

Oh, and it just occurred to me that between the 100+ homes lost in Montecito and the 500+ lost in Sylmar and the 300+ lost in Yorba Linda, we have lost at least 1000 homes in So Cal in a little over 24 hours. And now I hear the Brea fire (N of Yorba Linda) has jumped some freeway. And homes 2 blocks WEST of the Nixon Library have been destroyed.

I think I need to just go to bed. This is making me physically ill.

10. Very strange. Doesn't CA or LA Area have it's own power company that is supposed

to respond to emergencies? How did Halliburton get involved and why are they better than local companies to provide service? Isn't that what Californians pay for included in their electric bill?
