Army general is nation's first four-star woman

An Army lieutenant general has become the first woman in U.S. military history to get four stars.

The military on Friday promoted Lt. Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, who has served in several command positions in her 33-year Army career.

She will command Army Materiel Command, responsible for equipping, arming and outfitting soldiers.

General Dunwoody is a staff officer in supply. Most likely would not end up in the JCS. I'm very happy for her and all women in uniform. I had some very competent female shipmates and bosses in the Navy. Not all, but not all male bosses were competent either.

20. As a woman and an Army Veteran, I despise all use of the word "Female."

This excellent role model earned her rank as she's been in the US Army since "Jesus was a Corporal." (1976) That was during the initial days that women were being mainstreamed from the Women's Army Corps to the Regular Army.

As someone who pulled four years Active Duty in the early 1980s, I can attest to a continued attitude of RESENTMENT from many men (subordinates, peers and superiors).

On Point: The men always refereed to women as "Fee-males." You had to be there but the way that some of the mean-spirited men would enunciate that word ... well, it was not a complementary tone.

Even if it's not grammatically correct, I will opt to use WOMEN or WOMAN instead of the IMO disgusting word (to me) *Feeeeeeee-male(s).*

On Edit: When my opinion is set, I've not been known to "modify" much.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Call it breaking the brass ceiling. Ann E. Dunwoody, after 33 years in the Army, ascended Friday to a peak never before reached by a woman in the U.S. military: four-star general. At an emotional promotion ceremony, Dunwoody looked back on her years in uniform and said it was a credit to the Army — and a great surprise to her — that she would make history in a male-dominated military.

"Thirty-three years after I took the oath as a second lieutenant, I have to tell you this is not exactly how I envisioned my life unfolding," she told a standing-room-only auditorium crowd. "Even as a young kid, all I ever wanted to do was teach physical education and raise a family.

"It was clear to me that my Army experience was just going to be a two-year detour en route to my fitness profession," she added. "So when asked, `Ann, did you ever think you were going to be a general officer, to say nothing about a four-star?' I say, `Not in my wildest dreams.'

"There is no one more surprised than I — except, of course, my husband. You know what they say, `Behind every successful woman there is an astonished man.' "

22. That's a combined leadership problem. The tone is set by the individual commanders

and mostly at the Company Level. I would recommend that any young woman considering military service opt for ROTC and enter the service as an Officer. It's much more difficult to be coerced into compromising positions if you don't start out on the lowest rung of the Enlisted ranks.

"The rank of U.S. Army general is the most senior in that branch of the armed services. It is designated as O-10 on the military pay scale, which means a salary of about $14,000 to $17,000 per month, depending on the number of years of service."

That works out to $168,000 to $204,000 per year. Sorry, I couldn't find the retirement details. I think the usual scenario is you go work for a military contractor for ten times the money, or do guest commentaries on cable news shows.

Monthly retirement pay for an O-10 with 30+ years of service is a little under $10K. She'll get somewhere in the neighborhood of $112K/yr. when she retires.

They seem to have forgotten that Dwight Fucking Eisenhower never directly saw combat and did a lot of his own work in logistics too, but I guess such nuances roll off their backs.

Seriously though, considering how frothingly pro-military they tend to be, coupled with the fact that a lot of them really do believe that the US is-as-opposed-to-merely-should-be a place where there are no barriers, I actually am a little surprised at out outraged they were over this. I'm not entirely surprised, seeing as she is a woman and a logistician, but I expected a bit less vitriol over it than they're showing. Wow.
