Vote tally trend favors Begich for Senate

More than half the absentee and questioned ballots still to be counted in Alaska's U.S. Senate race come from areas of the state that backed Democrat Mark Begich on Election Day

That's not a good sign for Republican Sen. Ted Stevens as he seeks to overcome Begich's 814-vote lead when counting resumes today of just over 41,000 remaining ballots. A Daily News analysis, based on data provided by the state Division of Elections, shows that 56 percent of those ballots come from districts that favored Begich on Nov. 4.

The state will count about 40 percent of remaining ballots today and the rest early next week. Democrats like the trend but are wary of expressing too much confidence in a state that for decades has proven a graveyard for their hopes.

"I'll celebrate when I hear the words ... 'and the winner is,' " Begich said.

3. So far,McCain-Palin has a 23 point lead over Obama-Biden in Alaska.

That amounts to a differential of ~63,000 votes.

There are only 40,000 uncounted ballots left. The outcome won't change.

2. We have a very good chance of winning this one.

Begich was just on Thom Hartmann show, and apparently his campaign went to some great effort to get people to vote absentee, and those votes are the ones being counted now (which gave him his lead). They counted about half of those votes.

Franken is a toss up. Won't know about this one until Christmas.

Georgia is a much harder one for the Dems to win. The runoff will probably tilt more Repuke, plus they have the added spark of preventing the filibuster proof Senate.

I don't think this is a real issue anyway, as for many important Cloture Votes, Lieberman will vote with the Repukes. We are going to need 2 to 3 moderate Repukes to vote with us anyway.
