Leahy Becomes First Senator To Demand Lieberman's Ouster From Homeland Security Committee

We now have our first Dem Senator who has come on the record and called for Joe Lieberman to be booted from his plum spot on the Homeland Security committee.

In an interview with Vermont Public Radio today, Senator Patrick Leahy left no doubt whatsoever: He believes Lieberman should be given the push.

"Every Senator will have to vote the way he or she believes they should," Leahy said, in a reference to the upcoming vote on Lieberman's fate in the Dem caucus next week. "I'm one who does not feel that somebody should be rewarded with a major chairmanship after doing what he did."

"I felt some of the attacks that he was involved in against Senator Obama...went way beyond the pale," Leahy continued. "I thought they were not fair, I thought they were not legitimate, I thought they perpetuated some of these horrible myths that were being run about Senator Obama."

i think that anyone who has previously accepted the presidential or vice-presidential nomination has a special obligation to the party that nominated them. the entire party united an supported lieberman in 2000, withholding any particular issues with the candidate in particular, in the name of the party.

And, let's not forget that, at least in my own opinion, it's also about his showing such contempt for the will of the voters when he lost the primary, as a Dem, to Ned Lamont. The voters made their choice, but Lieberman refused to accept *their* choice. Feeling such a sense of entitlement to his seat that he thumbed his nose at the voters by, instead of accepting their choice of nominee, choosing to run as an Independent, instead. Since the Republicans had such a lousy candidate, it was through *their* financing and votes that he won reelection. What a snake!

Of course, no one ever said he couldn't become an Independent, for real. But it was just a means to an end for him. Now he's seeing the truth of that, for real, with his chairmanships being threatened. I said long ago that he should just at least be honest about where his true alliances lie - and join the Republican party. He's about as much of an "Independent" as I am.

It is called the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. The reason Lieberman needs to be replaced is his complete dereliction of duty on that front. There is plenty that needs to be rectified regarding previously issued no-bid contracts to FEMA and Dept. of Homeland Security, and the performance of the Federal Reserve, for starters. His counterpart in the House, Rep. Waxman conducted a number of serious investigations into the performance of the Dept. of Homeland Security and the failures of regulation re: Wall St. with the hope of instituting important reforms*, Lieberman has not. It is not a matter of revenge, but of getting someone who shows the inclination to behave with the proactive integrity a Democratic majority will expect from the person with such a crucial oversight position.

I think being on a committee like Homeland Security should be about more than just whether or not you support your party's presidential candidate. The question should be your ability to perform the task. I'd hate to see the running of a national security committee become more about politics than securing the nation. I see little reason Lieberman would oppose a Democratic agenda on Homeland security given that his disagreements are on foreign policy.

I just hope this is based on his ability to chair the committee and not just revenge for not supporting Obama. If most DUers had their way even moderates couldn't chair committees so there's no objectivity here.

Lieberman should only lose chairmanship on committees he can't or won't institute a Democratic agenda on.

He went on the record to say that he was "fearful for this nation" if Democrats won control of the White House, Senate and House. Is there any doubt that he'll hold hearing after hearing, keeping the administration tied up in testimony and producing documents.

It's not about revenge. It's about common sense. You have an apple and two men want that apple. One has worked his tail off to support your efforts, the other has stabbed you in the back at every turn. Which one gets the apple?

With whatever respect is due, even Sarah Palin would recognize that connection. He has chaired the committee for the past two years and has done nothing. Does that meet your criteria of lacking the ability to chair the committee. It certainly meets mine.

You sound as if Lieberman merely went on a talk show and endorsed McCain. Do you remember him speaking at the Republican Convention and standing there with McCain and Palin? I understand why some Dems what to keep him in the fold, because they probably will need a majority to break a filibuster set forth by the republicans and his vote could be crucial. Why can't the Democrats see this? Switching openly to Republican almost surely ends his Senatorial career. It's too risky to caucus with the Republicans and expect to win in New England and switching parties almost certainly kills his chances.

Vote him off this judicial committee where he is not aligned with the Democrats and where he is not aligned with the American public which voted overwhelmingly for change. He represents "more of the same" on this committee.

Offer him some other chairmanship in some other area where he is aligned with the Democrats. It's the pragmatic thing to do, it's a friggin no-brainer. Joe may not be happy about it, he might even turn it down (doubtful, remember he holds no cards) but at least, in the spirit of bipartisanship and forgiveness, the Democrats bent over backwards trying to reach across the aisle by offering him another chair.

Removing Lieberman from his chair position (and I would add preventing him from assuming any other chair) isn’t holding a grudge, vindictiveness or vengeance but appropriate.

This is a leadership issue.

A committee chair in the US Senate has too much power, influence and resources. He’s not being investigated, censured or kicked out of the Senate or even off of those (3 that I know of) committees. He’s still an elected Senator who has turned his back on the Democratic party, won office as an Independent and campaigned for the Republican candidate and said some less than kind things about our President elect.

Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, said he hopes Lieberman will remain in the party caucus and work to regain the trust of those he has disappointed.

"To reward Senator Lieberman with a major committee chairmanship would be a slap in the face of millions of Americans who worked tirelessly for Barack Obama and who want to see real change in our country," Sanders said in a statement. "Appointing someone to a major post who led the opposition to everything we are fighting for is not 'change we can believe in.'"

I heard Symington on VPR. She's always seemed OK.
