Obama, Clinton meet to talk about her future
Source: CNN

(CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama met with his former rival Sen. Hillary Clinton to see if she would be interested in a role in his administration, two sources told CNN Friday. Sen. Hillary Clinton has been mentioned as a candidate for Obama's secretary of state, sources say.

Obama also will meet with the man he defeated in the general election, Republican Sen. John McCain, on Monday, the Obama transition team announced Friday.

Clinton went to the meeting because "she knew Obama wanted to talk about whether she would have a role in the administration," one of the sources knowledgeable about the meeting said.

Obama and Clinton met in Chicago, Illinois, at the request of the president-elect, the sources told CNN.

9. Good Luck
First, you'll need to make it a downstater, to increase the chances the candidate has a higher education. Then, that candidate has to be someone who can relate to people north and west of Poughkeepsie and not treat them like provincials.

13. You Don't Have To Like It
Edited on Fri Nov-14-08 01:29 PM by Crisco
It's just a fact. This is the state that repeatedly sent men like Gerry Soloman and Al D'Amato back to DC again and again. When young people upstate get their college degrees, one of the first things they do is LEAVE for someplace they won't have to sell dope as a supplement to their $25k income. That leaves the Rush listeners to do the majority of the voting in most cities.

18. I agree, I wasn't saying she lied about anything
I don't think she ever said she wanted to be senator for the rest of her life. She has played things very close to the vest, as many people do when they are moving up in their career.

I think this is the perfect opportunity for her to bow out gracefully from a job that she might not find as compelling as she used to.

21. Um she said this in an interview I saw soon after the primaries
I don't remember the exact news show it was on but she said she didn't desire a position in the cabinet. Not my words.

24. She also said she didn't want to run for president "at this time"
I don't think she's every made a statement that was concrete enough to make it a lie if she quits the Senate and takes SOS. It's all couched as "I don't presently have any intention...." And I don't think that's a lie--everyone does that when they try to move up the ladder but don't want to burn bridges and diminish their options for a Plan B.

My supposition is that there's no reason for her to be a senator anymore--she's been there, done that, and she got all she can out of it. All she needs now is a graceful way to move on to the next stage.

if there hadn't been some subterranean dealing. They don't want to give the appearance of any kind of rift between this pair.

17. Why? Because there's no percentage in alienating a potentially large segment
of the party--also because it would be unlike Obama not to know the likely outcome of something before he does it.

8. If she takes Sec of State she is just looking to retire in a few years
Giving up a powerful job in the US Senate that could last to the end of her life for a Secretary of State job that would last 4 to 8 years seems like a step down for her. As Secretary of State her only power is what the President gives her. If she takes the job, she is just looking to get out of it all politics and just retire in a few years. I would be surprised if she takes it, but I bet Bill would like the job.

32. It does seem that way
and I have to say that if she leaves the Senate, it really reinforces the idea that the Senate bid was just a stepping stone to the Presidency. I could understand her leaving the Senate if the were going to be in charge of Health Care Reform since that is her "baby" but to be SoS? I just find that odd.

19. Some of my thoughts....
Is P/E Obama considering her for State so as to have her "inside" his administration because that would decrease the chances of a primary challenge from her in '12? And for her, she may consider being State to bolster her credentials for a run in '16 considering Biden wouldn't likely run because of his age then. Of course Hillary would be older then also, but not as old as Biden. I should have done my homework on their ages, but Biden is older than her if I'm not mistaken.
