Hate graffiti targets Obama backers in Torrance (CA)
Source: Bay Area News Group

TORRANCE — Vandals over the weekend attacked homes in south Torrance that displayed support for President-elect Obama, spray-painting cars, walls, trees and campaign signs with swastikas and racial slurs.

One Hollywood Riviera resident awakened to find a large Nazi symbol on a tree, the N-word across her garage door and the phrase "Go back to Africa" scrawled across a front wall.

"They had painted a big swastika on my car and spray-painted out my bumper sticker," she said Monday. "It was pretty shocking. Immediately my heart began racing."

Torrance police Sgt. Bernard Anderson said officers took four vandalism reports Sunday morning. The Daily Breeze located a fifth home that was hit.

One couple who live near Calle Mayor found the words "Hitler" and "Nazi" painted in black on their Volkswagen.

1. RW Radio Influence
That NewsMax is about as bad as Rush, Hannity and O'Reilly.

Freedom of speech is one thing, but our forefathers couldn't have imagined this trash operating as they do today. Their diatribe is abuse of speech.

11. Exactly. The FReepers are in a frenzy, and Rush/Sean et al are behind it.
They have completely deligitimized the election, and accused Obama of being a terrorist/Communist.

The Secret Service must be stretched to the limit.

Notice that not a single "responsible" GOP voice has called for Rush to cool it. Never has happened. Never gonna happen.

It's going to get worse. Wait until the Inauguration.

5. I am going to advocate here, after some thought on this subject,
since "we" are in power now that we treat these sub-humans exactly as that. These "people" shit on all of "us" in one way or another for more than 20 yrs now and since they want to play it this way, it is now PAYBACK time. I say if that's the way they want to play, then so be it. I for the record AM NOT advocating violence, BUT am advocating that we defend ourselves aggressively, AND if violently attacked, stating LOUDLY AND CLEARLY that we will respond in kind.

that was in response to the usual bevy of "god, texas/the south is such an awful place" whenever these things happen here. I guess it only reflects poorly on southerns when these idiots act up here, but not on the "good progressive" people of California.

By the way, your enlightened state had a hate crime rate 3.56/100,000 compared to us ignorant rednecks in Texas, 1.04/100,000. So a minority is more than 3x as likely to be attacked in California for being a minority than in Texas.

Ouch.

On edit:

A bunch of enlightened hate-crime committing, gay marriage fearing progressives out there. I'd be real proud if I were you.

21. So then
would it be fair to characterize them the same way Texans are characterized: as a bunch of ignorant, racist hicks?

Seems to be a whopping double standard applied here about certain groups that would never be tolerated for other groups.

Edited on Tue Nov-11-08 04:03 PM by JonQ
But I was referring to the characterization of an entire state, rather than simply the perpetrators. I think this thread would have turned out very different if it had taken place in the south or Texas. Less singling out of the guilty and more condemnations on the culture that supposedly tolerates such actions.

Not everyone does this, not even the majority, but there is a definite minority on here that seems to be perfectly willing to prejudge millions of people based on their own prejudices.

26. i understand and i totally agree
clearly it's false to claim bigots only live in the southern states. the passage of Prop 8 in california totally disapproves that myth. tom metzger's white aryan resistance was born right here in fallbrook, ca...a notoriusly racist enclave near san diego.

the only time i've been called the n word has been right here in california, and i've been to texas, florida, and georgia. my late uncle used to say he'd never been called the n word as much in his entire life as he was in orange county, ca. and he grew up in ohio and lived in texas most of his live

believe me...you are preaching to the choir, but it is always a timely sermon :hi:

40. So your reasoning
for declaring Texas backwards and California "good and progressive" is that if given the opportunity Texans would have voted the same as Californians? Think about that for a moment.

And what do you have to say about your level of hate crimes? How progressive is it to target minorities for violence?

It's because of our population density as compared to Texas. Plus, both major metropolitan areas have large and activist gay subcultures, which tends to keep those who can't stand the presence of anyone "different" in a perpetual state of frothing-at-the-mouth rage.

Also, some of the SoCal suburbs are white-bread bigot havens and always have been. Not just Orange County, but the Redondo Beach/Torrance area where I grew up wasn't just Republican, but actually Bircher country. My American Government (Civics) teacher at Redondo Union High School--who caused me to become a liberal for life in response to his attempted brainwashing--was rumored to be a Bircher. I wouldn't be at all surprised...it was the bane of his existence that he bore a slight resemblance to John Kennedy, which gives you some idea of how long ago this was.

So I am NOT the least bit surprised that the local regressives in Torrance have been acting out. Looks like a few things haven't changed since the early Sixties--not for the better anyway.

29. The same California that inflicted on the nation:
Reagan, Nixon, Schwarzenegger, the John Birch society, and a hundred different RW Christian groups, just to name a few? California's better than some other parts of the country, but it's hardly a liberal paradise. It's certainly no better or worse than anywhere else in this country.

And maybe I'm just a Pollyanna, but I'm starting to truly believe that racists are a minority everywhere in this country, even the red states (that's of course attributing McCain's majority vote there more on stupidity than racism).

Really, don't you find the whole "my state's better than your state" thing a little silly at this point?

i was raised on the OC, bastion of republikkkanism itself. i don't live there anymore, but do know how red some parts of are. like the other poster said, the central valley isn't such a progressive place. thank god for the coast! i also believe that the racists are a minority - after all obama was elected by a higher percentage of the pv, so the majority AREN'T racists.

agreed on the state thing, and i don't usually rag on other states, but the OP forced that shit. i'll say no more...

13. Law enforcement needs to do their job
As angry as it makes us,we must not take matters into our own hands.

Because( and I once worked in Torrance) that will only stir the pot against us not them.

It needs to be on record and it needs to be addressed to the political voices that are on our side.

Our camera on our cell phone and video should be our friend when needed for evidence.

Torrance is a cake walk compared to some parts of Orange County etc.

We are in for some mighty rough roads ~ they will not give up power easily.

We also know that all over America they are buying guns because "Obama will take away their right to own a gun."

Last I heard, he never said that but that is their excuse to get one and to shoot.

17. It is very telling that we never hear such stories about
Obama backers attacking McCain supporters--except in those cases (*cough* Ashley Todd) where it was all faked.

In fact, the violence and vandalism in past elections also virtually always comes from the right against the left. That shoule tell RW supporters something--but self-awareness is simply not their strong suit.

this is where I live and while I would like to think that it was outsiders who come in on the weekend to hit the beach bars ... the way the streets are it almost certainly has to be locals from the neighborhood. The streets wind around and you have to know your way in and out and have already targeted people (neighbors) to vandalize. It makes me physically ill to realize the truth ... I live among these people right here in a burb of Los Angeles. :puke:
