WASHINGTON (CNN) — Just hours after Democrats celebrated an expanded majority in the House of Representatives, a public fight erupted for the leadership of a key committee charged with enacting many of President-elect Barack Obama's agenda items.

In a written statement released Wednesday Waxman, who is the next senior Democrat on the committee, said: "When the new Congress starts in January, we will face unprecedented opportunities and challenges. The public expects Congress and President-elect Obama to work together to find solutions to the nation's most pressing problems. But the issues we will confront are immensely difficult. We will need the very best leadership in Congress and our committees
to succeed."

Its exceedingly unlikely that he could oust Dingell from Energy and Commerce. Dingell is the longest serving member of Congress at the moment. Seniority still counts in the House and while Pelosi may not be a fan of Dingell, she's not going to use the political capital it would take to push Dingell aside, especially given the repercussions it would have in Michigan. At best, a decision might be made to divide Energy and Commerce into two committees, which may be what Waxman is really angling for.

One of the automobile industry's harshest critics has decided to challenge automakers' best known ally on Capitol Hill for the chairmanship of the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., in a statement on his congressional Web site tonight, said that he thought long and hard but decided some of the most important issues in the new Congress will be undertaken in the committee.

He cited climate change, health care and energy and said he has the skill and ability to "deliver legislation that improves the lives of all Americans."

Rep. John Dingell of Michigan, the longtime senior Democrat on the panel, was returned to the chairmanship in 2007 after his party regained control of the House of Representatives in November 2006 elections.

Democrats expanded their margin Tuesday.

A Dingell spokeswoman told the Detroit News that the winning party should not be tearing itself apart with leadership fights and that Dingell will work to retain the chairmanship.
