Daughter of Ill Senator Dick Durbin dies

Joe Shoemaker, Communications Director for U.S. Senator Dick Durbin issued the following statement on the death of the Durbin's oldest daughter.

"Christine Ann Durbin, daughter of Senator Dick Durbin and Loretta Durbin passed away today from complications relating to a congenital heart condition. Chris Durbin, 40, fought a heroic lifelong battle with heart disease and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family."

12. I have never met Senator Durbin but love him just the same.

He has done a great job here in Illinois and if he should somehow lose on Tuesday, I would take to the street screaming. But I am counting on Chicago to keep us under his protection.

I feel very saddened by the news that Christine Durbin died today. My heart goes out to Senator Durbin, his wife and their other children and to her husband and son. May there be peace in knowing that her death frees her from the pain that she has endured throughout her life, and that she is at last at rest. I can only imagine the pain that comes from losing ones child, and it is a pain I hope not to endure. I do know the pain of losing a mother, and so I really feel empathy for her son. Words cannot say the sorrow that this family feels today, and I won't even try.

17. I've met him and his wife.

I've had my picture taken with him.

He has had a home for years in our state capitol. He actually LIVES there, unlike some Washington politicians.

In addition to fulfilling his duties in Washington, Durbin is very active and supportive of grassroots politics. That is how I know him. Durbin understands the importance of building and sustaining the party from the most basic to the highest levels.

42. Yes, I am from Illinois also and know his history.

He was trained by our late great Paul Simon who lived in my area. Durbin comes down here every so often, has an office here, but due to my illness I have never met him. I have met his office personal.

He was suppose to come down with Obama in 2004, but there was an emergency vote in Congress and he did not make it. I hated that I missed meeting him then. He has been down here several times since then, but I have no transportation to go see him plus my health prevents me from attending rallies and such where I would have to stand. (not much public transportation in small towns and none taking you from my town to another one unless you can afford a taxi.)

Both Durbin and my congressional representive Jerry Costello grew up in East St. Louis, which I find interesting. Durbin does now live in Springfield. I try not to send him messages anymore, since I was actively talking to both his office here and the one in Springfield there for a while. My daughter came to the conclusion that he would think I was stalking him.

I thought he was a downstate native, from Springfield of not too far from there... Just got back from to the NW burbs from Champaign, Dads night for the Marching Illini Dads so this is the first I have heard.... Peace to the Durbin family...

CNN) -- The daughter of Sen. Dick Durbin died Saturday from a congenital heart condition, the Illinois Democrat's office said.

"Chris Durbin, 40, fought a heroic lifelong battle with heart disease and our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Durbin family," said Durbin's spokesman, Joe Shoemaker.

Chris Durbin worked for 16 years for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington.

Survivors include her husband, Marty Johnson, and son, Alex.

Her death comes as Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, seeks a third term in Tuesday's general election.

Funeral arrangements for his daughter were not immediately announced.
