| Supporting Obama? No treats for you at Grosse Pointe Farms house |
 |
Edited on Sat Nov-01-08 03:56 PM by faygokid
Source: Detroit NewsGROSSE POINTE FARMS -- A Grosse Pointe Farms woman has doled out political tricks by refusing Halloween treats to children whose parents support Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Shirley Nagel passed out candy Friday -- but only to those who shared her support for Republican presidential candidate John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin. Fox 2 News says a sign posted outside Nagel's house, about 12 miles west of Detroit, served notice to all trick-or-treaters. It read: "No handouts for Obama supporters, liars, tricksters or kids of supporters." Nagel tells WJBK-TV that "Obama's scary." When asked about children who'd been turned away empty-handed and crying, she said: "Oh well. Everybody has a choice." Fax and phone messages were left Saturday at numbers listed in Nagel's name. The Farms is a wealthy suburb, but I am sure this is roundly condemned by all there. What an embarrassment. This is all they've got left, this kind of ugliness. Can't wait to hear her Christmas plans.

and, by the sound of it, completely unawares. Victimising young children on political grounds! I was going to say that it beggars belief. Would that it were so. So many of the remaining radical right-wingers, calling themselves Republicans, don't reach the level of "pond life".

Matter of fact, RNC delegate from Michigan http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/04/w... "Nagel, a retired schoolteacher from Detroit, had anticipated few events as eagerly as she did Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's speech Wednesday night. Ever since Sen. John McCain named her his running mate Friday, Nagel had watched clips of Palin on television, read stories about her in the newspaper, and learned enough about her family -- the new baby, the pregnant daughter, the daughter's boyfriend -- to feel, Nagel said, "like we've known each other for 20 years." All that remained, she said, was a formal introduction.
"You judge a book by its cover, and we've been waiting for that chance with her," said Nagel, dressed in a hockey jersey like the rest of the Michigan delegation. "We want to see how tall she is, if she wears heels, how she wears her hair. That's stuff us Republican women need to know."
When Palin finally did make her introduction, Nagel approved of what she saw -- and heard. Nagel once coached a high school speech and debate team, and she liked how Palin defended her family without sounding defensive. She stood up on her red folding chair at the end of Palin's speech and leaned in to take a picture. "She started with the family and then moved on, just like everybody should do," Nagel shouted above the roar of the crowd. "She's a woman, and she showed she's tough. She attacked Obama. She touched on all the issues. We love her."

live in the Pointes. I'm sure there are many there who are cheering this, family values and all. The Detroit News is the right-wing paper here. Their editor is a nutbag of the highest degree. Nolan Finley is the guy. He wrote an article the other day explaining how much Michigan will benefit from global warming.
edit to add: Grosse Pointe is where I had a repug fox news watching crazy almost throw me out of her house because she thought I was Jewish, and you know "all those Jews are so Liberal". I said "Joe Lieberman is Liberal?" She said "I don't wnat to pay for your............." she forgot how the rest of the talking point went. I told her "I pay for my own insurance, etc., you're not paying for anything of mine." She also thought fox was the only "real news". This is a woman living in a $500,000 house.

The Farms is upscale, and reich wing. But they won't welcome this kind of publicity, either. The Farms aren't really Palin yaa-hoo country. They hate and discriminate tastefully, and this will be abhorrent to them.
You are right about The Detroit News, but they have been that way for 30 years. Will look up the global warming crapola article. Thanks, and I plan to retire back to Michigan, still the best state in the union (except for the Lions).

Instead of giving away treats to every child who knocks on her door, parents say she's only giving them to kids who agree with her choice for president. |
The word Halloween is a contraction of "All Hallows Even" or All Hallows Eve. November 1st is All Saints Day, in which saints are remembered. November 2nd is All Souls' Day, wherein all the dead are remembered. So the Mexican Day of the Dead celebration is spot on.
It's about remembering your ancestors in the Christian tradition.

 |
For the following reasons: 1) It's not a "christianist" holiday. 2) Children going trick or treating, is like them asking for handouts, when we all know that they should have to work hard for their candy, and not ask for 'welfare' from the people with candy. 3) Handing out candy to kids who do not have candy, and want it is like socialism, and spreading the wealth, and we all know that Republicans have no need for socialism.
This place mentioned in the OP must not have gotten the memo.

We'd make a list and all year, and that that magical night would happen. The treat was not an option. The ol' set the paper bag full of dogshit on her porch, light it on fire and run, taking her own garden hose, preferable with a high pressure nozzle, ring her door bell, and when she opened it, full blast, and then run, fire a dozen rotten eggs on her house, let the air out of the car tires. I don't recall ever doing any of this stuff to people at random. Only mean people and, of course, teachers we didn't like.
Where are the 13 year olds of yester year.

I recall an OP on this board not too long ago where the poster was trumpeting the fact that he had refused service in his art gallery to people sporting McCain paraphenalia, and pretty much all of the responders congratulated him for it. I was one of the few to criticize him and ask people to think about whether they wanted to live in a society where you got served in hotels, stores, restaurants, etc., based on your political affiliation. Not many seemed to take the lesson to heart. Well, this is the sort of thing that happens when people come to accept this kind of discrimination as a good idea. Granted, doing it to children takes it to a new level of low, but it's not that much better even if it were confined to adults.

To me, the Republicans are the greatest Enemy this country has. I go out of my way to fuck with them.
And there were no children involved, just three adults. But if a child would have been with them, I would have given that child something really cool. Maybe an old Chinese cricket house or something.

| 93. The question still stands |
 |
Would you want to live in a country where the service and public accommodation you get depends on your political affiliation? Especially when there are a lot of Republicans who think that liberals are the greatest enemy this country has? Whether that type of discrimination is directed at adults or children is really irrelevant in the final reckoning. It's a bad idea. If you want to fight political battles, you can do it in political arenas. And please don't tell me that it was your shop, so you had every right to do it. Having the right to do a thing does not necessarily make it the right thing to do.

your overblown attempts to romanticize carrying a fight through misguided channels notwithstanding. When you've all fucked each other to death and left no society worth living in, then come back and tell me how happy you are with yourself.

| 128. I agree with you. Recently there was a thread shere the OP said they "smacked down" |
 |
some republicans in line at a store. The OP was totally sarcastic and angry according to their own description and most of the posts in response were congratulatory. All that does is keep it at a level of a team sport and send the person home with reinforced beliefs about the "other team". We're all one team with different views, especially when we're talking about the average citizen and not the corrupt politicians. They are their own team. But a better approach is to calmly explain your viewpoint, the truth, and let them come to the realization that what they've been hearing is not true. Perhaps they will change the channel or radio station and see that they have been fed a load of propaganda. Most of them really don't know that.

I live fairly close to Grosse Pointe Farms and it is not made up of entirely wealthy people. This woman is just sad and sick and one thing people don't realize when they are doing these controversial things, such as not giving candy to children of Obama supporters or making statements which show their inner personalities, such as being covert racist or bigots, they have to live in the communities they are displaying those behaviors in after Tuesday. People are going to view them differently and interact with them differently from now on. I'm sure her neighbors are shocked. I just discovered a woman I thought I knew from attending spiritual events over the years, who has a website as a astrologer/psychic is a, well, bigot. I receive her newsletter on the election and I was stunned by what she writes. If you dare, go to: http://www.new-visions.com/page/2 and read the spew this woman writes under the guise of an astrological/psychic prediction. I wrote a scathing comment and of course it wasn't posted. It was even devoid of profanity. When it wasn't posted I wrote her personally but of course no response. I probably will be seeing her by the end of the month if patterns hold but I don't think she will be welcomed because others who know her and have read this newsletter(I use the word loosely) are outraged. If you read it and are as outraged as I am, write here and tell her. She needs a reality check. As to Shirley Nagel, this will be her consciousness shift. Her reality check. It's like the press trying to take pictures of Obama's children on Halloween. No one likes people messing with their kids. She will have regrets. As the saying goes: God don't like ugly.

Of course GPF is east of Detroit, and right next to it. That was insane. And from the Detroit News, no less! Great catch, and thanks. Bizarre.

Apparently someone forgot to tell her the last Republican president to win Michigan was Poppy Bush in 1988.

If you want to get a look at what kind of person would politicize Halloween and deny candy to children-go to Huffington Post at this web address: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/11/01/mccain-support... and meet Shirley Nagel.

sure has the media in tow . . . a LOT.
For a retired schoolteacher and a part-time delegate, her name is popping up everywhere. It's weird that she would make such a public example of herself and her selfish Republican ways, which seem to rotate around the great American traditions of exclusivity and general super-dickishness.
