WWL Poll: Obama-McCain in virtual tie in Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS - An exclusive new WWL-TV statewide poll shows the contest for president may be closer than many had predicted among Louisiana voters.

In the telephone survey of 500 registered voters, conducted by pollster Ed Renwick, Republican Senator John McCain earns 43 percent of the vote, while Democrat Senator Barack Obama receives 40 percent. Renwick said that amounts to a statistical tie, since the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 points.

“It's closer than I thought it would be,” said Renwick, adding that the higher the turnout, the worse it might be for McCain.

“That’s because they'll probably be people who don't usually vote, who don't vote often, or weren’t registered to vote until recently. Those people would not be heavy McCain voters. They would be Obama voters.”

I'm a Texan, but I was born in Louisiana. I love Louisianans; they're good people. But in general they are not the kind of people who learn from experience. McCain will win there by at least a 10 point spread.

Even if Louisiana is close, it puts a crimp on Jindal (the wonder boy).

Here's one New Orleanian hoping for the Mississippi to wash away some of the stain of the last 4 years.

And maybe we'll get some of that post-Katrina help we were promised.

You have to be "white and delightsome" in the words of their book of Mormon to have a shot at it there. I lived there for six months back in 2005. The few African-Americans I saw in SLC or its bigger suburbs seemed surprised that I would say hello to them when I saw them.

Of course, when they saw me in the state liquor store, they knew I was "OK"! Hell, we were all friends there, I helped people find great Northwest wines to try!

I'd love to see that they've changed, but I'm not holding my breath over it.

22. Not surprising to me...

I've been saying that Obama needs to make at least one swing through here and that Louisiana is in play...if African-Americans turn out in this state, Democrats are hard to beat. I think we'll see record African-American turnout...don't be surprised if Obama turns bayou country blue again!!!

I'm realistic enough to know that an Obama win is unlikely, but I do believe that the state is winnable.

Democrat turnout for early voting was a little over double that of Republicans. Hopefully those Democrats and Obama supporters that haven't already voted will book it to the polls on Tuesday.

And Ron Paul is on the ballot so that may pick off a few Republicans.
