Palin Suggests Obama Is A Socialist
Source: CBS News

(SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.) Sarah Palin issued a scathing new line of attack on Barack Obama’s tax plan at a rally here, citing an interview he gave as an Illinois state senator in 2001 as evidence that he favors socialist policies that fly in the face of the Constitution.

“It was just the other day that a tape of an interview from 2001 turned up, and there he was talking about the need for quote 'redistributive change,’” Palin said. “And Sen. Obama said that—he said that he regretted--he regretted that the Supreme Court hadn't been more radical and he described the court's refusal to take up the issues of redistribution of wealth as a tragedy and he said that he also regretted that the Supreme Court did not break free from the essential constraints that were placed by the founding fathers there in the Constitution, that's a quote.”

Palin said that voters have to ask themselves whether Obama—a former Constitutional law professor—would like to rewrite the Constitution and questioned what kinds of Supreme Court justices he would appoint.

Now me, I'd be pretty fucking pissed that she'd think me that stupid.

But then, I'm not that stupid.

Which is why I know she is -IN FACT- lying.

50. Not to mention the Apostles . . .
I wonder if "Acts" is printed in Republican/fundie bibles? Maybe it's only in my liberal "Good News" translation. I'll check. BRB . . .

OK, NIV Bible, Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2:
(42) They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (43) Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. (44) All the believers were together and had everything in common. (45) Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. (46) Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, (47) praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Well, by gosh and golly, it's there. I guess it would have been kinda inconvenient to leave out the beginning of chapter 2, with the Pentecost story, what with the "speaking in tongues" thing.

But I think I'm gonna have to retroactively mark Mr. Marx down a half letter grade for cribbing vv. 44-45 without proper citation.

AP Sides With Obama on "Redistribution" Charge

Wire service fact check accuses McCain of "misreading" the 2001 comments by Obama about "redistributive change."

Says Obama called the civil rights movement's focus on the Supreme Court a "tragedy," not the fact that the high court didn't pursue the "redistribution of wealth."

And/But: Says Obama didn't define redistributive change in the interview, but gave one example using education.

20. Governor Palin doesn't know anything about the economy.
Governor Palin would have benefited greatly from Barack's classes when he was a Constitutional law professor. What he is proposing isn't socialism, by any near stretch. It naturally makes since to tax people with higher incomes and reduce taxes with people earning less than 250,000 a year. What the Republicans call 'Marxist theories' is actually Keynesian economics. By using flash words like "Sociolism" and "terrorist" the McCain campaign hopes to scare voters into voting for them. What Palin also doesn't realize is that the constitution was written to deal with the problems of the time- problems such as slavery and federalism that have since been settled. In fact, most of the founding fathers concede that the constitution was written as a solution to current problems, not something to be used as a guideline for the next thousand years. In many cases, the Supreme Court should make decisions outside the perceived boundaries placed on them by the constitution, and Sarah Palin should stop trying to appeal to the "Republican base" and do some calculated research that makes her sound semi informed for once.

21. Based on her description, Governor Palin is a communist as she touts Alaska
...as, “... conceding too much, and chipping away at our sovereignty. And Alaska—we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” And she said, “Our state constitution—it lays it out for me, how I’m to conduct business with resource development here as the state C.E.O. It’s to maximize benefits for Alaskans, not an individual company, not some multinational somewhere, but for Alaskans.”

25. and $700 billion bailout is not socialism?
The republicans socialized 90% of the mortgage and banking industry, charged it to the taxpayer who in turn has lost half of their retirement savings to the same people bailed out on Wall Street. Call it spreading the wealth, call it socialism, call it what ever you like but the middle class deserves a lot of what Wall Street is getting.

26. Their scare tactics are baffling and lame.
Our government uses socialistic principles in much of our programs and institutions. In fact, our primary purpose for taxes is to maintain our local, state, and federal governing bodies, including our military. Anything outside that is for those in need or for the well being in essence of the masses or whole, etc. and are socialistic ideas put in practice. Examples include our welfare system and our public school system, our public libraries, etc.

And for the good of the whole, part of your tax dollars will go to the public system for ex. even if you don't have kids, nor ever plan on having them whether you want to pay taxes for it or not.

If our country strictly ran on capitalism, then the USA would be a very different country today. So why are people freaking-out over the suggestion that a candidate, be it Obama or whomever, might use socialistic principles in their political approaches. If they want to be alarmed over something they should start with Palin's fascist ideas of government.

And if McSame and Poison Palin supporters are having fits over whether they think Obama is socialistic or not, then I'd like a refund check from the GOP parent's for the money I've put in the school system which their spawns are using. I started paying taxes as a teenager and have more then paid back what other tax payers spent on me when I was in public school. I don't have kids and don't plan on having them. So if they want to b*tch over capitalism vs. socialism, they can start pulling out their monies out and put it my bank account. Come on Palin, hand it over!! :-)

27. I'm starting to suspect the pugs like to use women to do their really dirty work
They find a semi-attractive, not so bright woman and coach her to spew hate and verbal pus. I think it's a deliberate ploy on their part to have the delivery via a woman because they see women as less threatening -- examples include Coultergeist, Elizabeth Hasselfuck and now Sarah('s)Failin'. The truly frightening thing is that they spew the hate without apparently haven given any critical thought to the content and not enough intellectual ability to veer from the script and expound on an idea.

31. Socialist
I'm just stunned that anyone still dumps on socialists. They are sort of to the right of me, but not bad in general. Now those damn centrists, while they are generally ok and can be pressured into more progressives policies, they are really to the right of me. Now don't get me wrong, the Dem. party with all it's warts is still my party till I die. Education in labor history made me a Marxist. I believe basically that labor should somehow profit from their work. I wish people would be more thoughtful when slinging around these terms as we all should realize that they are fictions of the owners put out there to keep us divided as workers. About done and time to go south for a vacation from politics. It's one week and still work to be done, but now is the time to relax and just go with the flow. Enjoy the last days of this campaign as the historic days that they are.

33. progressive income tax = socialism? fine but its bipartisan
I thought Electoral-vote.com gave a nice repsonse to this socialist claim

The McCain campaign apparently has a new theme this week: attacking Obama for wanting to "spread the wealth." But it is not clear what that really means. Many Republicans have bitterly opposed the federal income tax since the 16th amendment was passed in 1913. Is McCain going to repeal the federal income tax? If so, how does he plan to finance the government? Or does he mean that the difference between the top rate of 39.6% under Bill Clinton and the top rate of 36% under George Bush is the difference between communism and capitalism? The purpose of the progressive federal income tax is to spread the wealth. That Democrats have supported a progressive income tax for decades is hardly news. Does McCain want to keep the tax but make it a flat tax (a la Steve Forbes)? No word on this. It seems this is just another desperate attempt to attack Obama rather than being a serious policy proposal for tax reform and it comes awfully late in the game. If McCain wanted to run on a platform of a flat tax, he certainly has had the opportunity, but until now he didn't bring up the subject.

34. Alaska receives about $1.90 back for every dollar they send to Washington.
I believe Arizona receives more than what they send also. When they start sending more than what they
receive like most of those damned liberal states like California, Oregon,
Washington State, Illinois, Massachusetts, etc. then I might give a shit about what she says.
Til then she should STFU and worry about staying out of jail.

36. My numbers are from 2005, and show Alaska at $1.83.
Arizona comes in at $1.19. I call them the Red State Welfare Queens.

In fact, 17 of the top 20 "takers" are Red, with 9 from the original CSA. All of the "Southern" classified states are Welfare Queens except for Texas and Florida, and they barely squeek by at $.97 and $.95 respectively.

Illinois ($.78) and Delaware ($.80) pay in more than they get back. Of the top 20 "givers", 14 are Blue. Including CA, NY, NJ, CT, NH, and MA.

If they want to talk states' rights and fiscal responsibility, let's start with this issue. Seems only fair.

I think they publish the numbers every year, so they change.

When you combine the irony with my total disgust with these people there's a part of me that would prefer the NE and the West coast sign on with Canada and junk the rest. Or maybe get an easement from the 49th parallel states, for connectivity, if Canada doesn't want us.

For the year 2005, California gave $60 Billion more to Washington than was returned. Would have solved a lot of problems. Actually makes the issue of immigration seem rather small in comparison.

I like Obama well enough and think he'll make a fine president, but the term "socialist" is an honor he hasn't proven himself worthy of, at least not yet. Who knows, he may one day grow into that sublimely evolved accolade, but, c'mon, let's not kid ourselves, he's not there yet.
