ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Republican Rep. Michele Bachmann says she regrets using the term "anti-American" while discussing Barack Obama's views.

Bachmann told the St. Cloud Times on Tuesday that she "made a big mistake" by going on MSNBC's "Hardball" on Friday.

Her statement that Obama "may have anti-American views" drew condemnation and helped her opponent, Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg, raise more than $1 million in just a few days.

Bachmann says she walked into a trap and did not bring up the term "anti-American." She says she does not believe that Obama is anti-American or that members of Congress should be investigated for their views on America. She says, "I deeply regret it because that is not what I meant."

Whenever they say something bad and are then called on it, they usually turn around and say, "Oh, I'm sorry, that's not what I meant." What part of "Democratic members of Congress should be investigated to see if they're sufficiently patriotic" did she not mean? What else could she have meant?

These days, most of the Republican message is between the lines, and the actual information content of the spoken word means a lot less than what isn't said.

For example, Obama's proposed tax cuts are "welfare," while McCain's corporate welfare is "reform." The ground-level schutzstaffeln probably can't accurately define either word, much less the massive difference between them. What's more important is the message behind the statement: "my wee-wee is bigger than your wee-wee, and if you come over to my stall I'll let you see it in a totally not-gay way."

I hope the rest of the hate-mongers learned a lesson from this.

When the interview ran last week a quick look at Du saw OPs complaining that Tweety let her control the interview. When she controlled it right into the ground it was clear that Tweety didn't need to "trap" her, she is insane and caught herself in her own web.

I watched Bachmann's interview live, (mouth agape); again at 7:00 that night and about four more times over the weekend. She did not walk into a trap. People like her really DO have this "Pro-American or Anti-American," "for us or against us," "right or wrong," "conservatives good, libruls bad" mindset.

I'm not a regular Hardball viewer, so this is just presumption, but she's been largely a "regional kook" sort of congressman, i.e. if you are involved in the issues that she's involved in, you hear about her a lot because she says and does so much stupid stuff, but she doesn't have a lot of power or influence. (There's the infamous picture of her at Bush's last SOTU speech where she's grasping on to his shoulder like a hawk clutching a fish, and Chimpy is trying to get away--you almost felt sad for him.)

Still, how the hell can you be in politics at any level and not know about Hardball?
