Telegraph's choice: Obama
Ten months ago, when it came time to endorse two candidates in the New Hampshire Democratic and Republican primaries, we recommended Illinois Sen. Barack Obama and Arizona Sen. John McCain.

Among the Democratic candidates, we believed Obama was the best suited to reach across the aisle to solve the nation's problems and described him as "a genuine and authentic voice for hope and healing during difficult and divisive times."

As for McCain, who we also endorsed along with Democrat Bill Bradley in 2000, we were similarly effusive in our praise, singling him out for his integrity, leadership and long history of "straight talk" to American voters.

At that time, it would have been difficult to choose between the two men – one a 72-year-old former war hero who has devoted his entire life to his country; the other a 47-year-old one-term senator with the message of change and the oratorical skills to excite and inspire a whole new generation of Americans.

That was then; this is now.

Today, we endorse Barack Obama in his historic bid to become the 44th president of the United States of America. At this critical point in the nation's 232-year history, the young senator from Illinois is the right person at the right time to lead this country back to its former greatness and standing in the world community.

Under "Why NOT McCain"

Then there was the baffling selection of little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate – a heartbeat away from the presidency – in the first critical test of his judgment as the standard bearer of his party.

Yes, her selection did inject some much-needed excitement into the campaign. Yes, it was popular with some segments of the party's conservative base. And, yes, it did bring some executive experience to the ticket, even if it's as governor of a state that by population is 47th in the nation and about half the size New Hampshire.

But the most qualified Republican for the No. 2 job in the country? Someone who would be ready and able to step into the corner office in case of an emergency and lead the country?

In Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, Obama chose someone to help him govern the nation. In Palin, McCain chose someone to help him win the election. Which act was more presidential?

Here is the interview referenced in the article"

4. My current hometown paper!
Usually reliable Democratic, though they'll pick a moderate Republican now and again.
