Archbishop criticizes Obama, Catholic allies
Source: The Associated Press

Denver Roman Catholic Archbishop Charles Chaput labeled Barack Obama the "most committed" abortion-rights candidate from a major party in 35 years while accusing a Catholic Obama ally and other Democratic-friendly Catholic groups of doing a "disservice to the church." ...

... The Obama campaign has been promoting an unusual-suspect sort of endorsement from Douglas Kmiec, a Catholic law professor and former legal counsel in the Reagan administration.

Kmiec wrote a book making a Catholic case for Obama. He argues the Obama campaign is premised on Catholic social teaching like care for working families and the poor and foreign policy premised on peace over war. Democratic efforts to tackle social and economic factors that contribute to abortion hold more promise, Kmiec said, than Republican efforts to criminalize it. ...

Catholic Leaders Fight Legislation on Suits
States Consider Easing Statutes of Limitations

By T.R. Reid
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, April 1, 2006; Page A10

DENVER -- When Colorado lawmakers proposed making it easier for victims of sexual abuse by priests to sue the Roman Catholic Church here, Denver Archbishop Charles J. Chaput fought back hard.

He charged that the effort to relax statutes of limitations reflected "a peculiar kind of anti-Catholicism" and said the goal of some lawmakers is the "dismantling and pillaging of the Catholic community."

Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput is among those pointing to the sexual abuse of children in public schools and calling the measures anti-Catholic.

Church representatives have testified to legislative panels here that children in public schools are just as open to sexual abuse as in a church setting and have even given state lawmakers the names of public school teachers who allegedly abused children. Chaput said in an interview with a church newspaper that diocesan officials went to a Denver newspaper with concerns about abuse by public school teachers and others in an effort to get a story published.

9. Anything the church doesn't want is "a peculiar kind of anti-Catholic".
The hypocrisy is astounding.

3. The hierarchy is shutting down parishes all over the world because of
the artificial priest shortage. I'll start listening to men like the Archbishop after they show they can run their own house properly!

And after the sexual abuse claims which have been proven true these assholes have a lot of nerve to talk about caring about children. IMO religions are cults.

6. Catholic and Pro-Obama!!!!
Uf, sometimes leaders in the Catholic church can be extremely naive. I'm not personally pro-choice, but this is not the only issue that matters to me. I'm not going to put another lunatic in the presidency who is going to finish off this great country, start new unnecessary wars, and break misery into other lives. There are other ways of diminishing abortion without overturning Roe vs. Wade. Plus, I can't even conceive the possibility of having a right wing Supreme Court sending us back 100 years into the past. I don't think I'm in the majority in my church, but I'm sure there are plenty of Catholics out there who will vote for Obama. They just rather keep it to themselves.

7. Chaput wants to go to Rome as soon as possible like Burke did
Notice the more vocal you are as a bishop/archbishop or even priest that means they want a fast tract to promotion, no more, no less. It is all about climbing the ladder of power and not anything related to real life. :puke:

10. I always like to point out that
No one has ever been required to have an abortion because of roe vs wade. On the other hand, in an unjust war, killing is mandatory. Which position is really "pro-life". It is also important for pro-lifers to realize that the abortion rate has actually gone up as Bush policies put greater economic pressures on women. Also, countries with the most liberal social structure tend to have lower abortion rates.

16. Selective Morality?
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 09:46 PM by Zambero
I'm a Roman Catholic, but concede that a review of the shamefully corrupt history of the Papacy over the past 1,000 years raises some serious doubts about the pope's infalibility. No pope, priest, bishop, or archbishop can dicate another's conscience, and no sin involving killing (be it an elected representative's position on late term abortion, or the lies that justified the war in Iraq) is superior to another.

I thought it was 'inflatable'. As in "ready to produce great gusts of hot air" when the word abortion is mentioned.

17. Maybe Chaput ought to stick to cleaning up his pedophile corps instead of condemning...
..someone about their stand on a woman's right to chose. This is such bullshit. It makes me ashamed to be a Catholic when I hear someone from the pulpit playing God Almighty.

FUCK YOU archie. Mind your OWN BUSINESS and clean up your own pews.

For once I'd like to hear an archbishop say Scalia cannot receive communion because he is pro-death penalty and once said the pope was wrong about the death penalty.

25. When is the Catholic Church going to recognize....
that they're being punked by a Republican Party that has absolutely no intention of overturning Roe v. Wade for as long as they can exploit it as a political issue?

Why should anybody listen to the Catholic Church when they care more about preserving the prestige of their hierarchy than about the well-being of their parishoners?

26. With all due respect to the church
It was Pope John Paul II that finally recognized that the earth was, indeed round. Wars have been fought over religion - and countless millions have died, and will continue to do so. Countless thousands of women have been disenfranchised, condemned for witchcraft, and burned under the churches direct orders and enthusiasm. In modern times, many children have suffered abuse at the hands of "moral" priests. Our own sad history involving native americans and how the churches treated children at residential schools is a sorry indicator of their morals.

When this church condemns war, then perhaps I will give them the moral authority to actually listen to what they say. Until then, they do not practice what they preach, and my ears will not listen to hypocrits.

27. Translation: vote Republican or roast in Hell
Bishop Charlie Kaput is one of those right-wing fascists who thinks God died and left him in charge. He's one of those theocons so obsessed with sex that he puts criminalizing abortion--while leaving women and kids to fend for themselves--above even the right for these families to feed their kids. So what if they starve. :puke:
