Bachmann Comments Raise At Least $150k For Opponent
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 03:50 PM by RamboLiberal
Source: CBS News

It's unlikely that the American media will produce the "penetrating exposé" into whether members of Congress are "pro-America or anti-America" that Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) called for Friday, but there has been at least one consequence she may not have expected: Her congressional opponent, Democrat El Tinklenberg, has been showered with cash from all parts of the country — America, that is — as apparently insulted Americans respond to Bachmann's request.

"I can absolutely confirm that we have had in the last 24 hours donations from hundreds and hundreds of people from all over the country," said Tinklenberg campaign manager Anna Richey. "It's coming in so fast I can't get a hold on it and can't give a precise number. It's still coming in." At minimum, she said, $150,000 has so far been donated and she expects the total, which the campaign will release later today, to be far higher.

"It's overwhelming," said Richey. "I've gotten 600 e-mail messages into our info e-mail account in the last 12 hours. People are outraged." She said a number of the e-mails decried Bachmann's call for the investigation as modern-day McCarthyism. "People shared personal stories of how their parents were discriminated against" during that time, said Richey.

The messaes, she said, came from "Republicans, Democrats, people who professed to be out of work and struggling economically but wanted to give what they could."

Bachmann on Friday told MSNBC's Chris Matthews that Barack Obama is not the only anti-American member of Congress. "The news media should do a penetrating exposé and take a look. I wish they would. I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out: Are they pro-America or anti-America? I think people would love to see an exposé like that," she said.

 And there's $15 more coming from me when I get off my butt and walk up the steps to get my credit card.

Political analyst Steve Smith says Tinklenberg has a chance. "Two years ago, Bachmann won the contest 50-42, but with an endorsed Independence Party candidate picking up eight percent."

This year, Tinklenberg has been endorsed by the Independence party, as well as the DFL. It helps his electoral math, especially in a year that already is looking rough for Republicans.

12. Amazing.
I hope it's not too late. Bachmann must be furious today -- what a way to bludgeon your own campaign!

These people never learn, do they?

8. Beauty of this as well is DCCC was going to give him funds
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 04:03 PM by RamboLiberal
Now they can give to another candidate and further grow the majority or still give him the funds to help defeat Bachman since she seems to have a lot of cash! Damn, Bachman raised more for him with her heeled foot in mouth crap than he raised in 3rd quarter.

Calling the race in Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District competitive, a national Democratic committee signaled Tuesday that it would commit significant financial support to DFL candidate Elwyn Tinklenberg.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) is adding Tinklenberg to its Red to Blue program, a list of candidates deemed capable of beating a Republican incumbent and worthy of extra money. Two years ago 56 Democratic candidates received an average of $400,000 each from the program.

Tinklenberg has trailed Rep. Michele Bachmann in fundraising.

His campaign released new financial reports Tuesday, showing it raised $469,000 in the third quarter of this year, for a total of $1 million during the 2007-08 election cycle. He has $357,000 in cash on hand.

9. I do, however, agree with her that an expose needs to be done
on her...and the other members of the GOP who are charging Americans with being "anti-American". Especially the charge that liberals and democrats are not "American". How DARE they? Liberalism is the foundation of progressive thought, without which we would not have a democracy. And based on what charge are we not American? That we have an ideology we stand by? Is that treason now? McCarthy-ism and Christo-Fascism are NOT American. These people are acting in manner which directly violates the tenets of our democracy. This should not be tolerated.

It seems much clearer to me that inciting acts of terrorism against law-abiding, tax-paying citizens based on their ideology is an act so treasonous it should be censured immediately by every thinking citizen in this country.

19. Did he really? This is so true. I love it.
Oh, I would have paid to see that!

I mean, the truth is I think they are closer to Fascists than we (the dems, not progressives) are to socialists...but I'll take what I can get. They have also already turned this country into a pseudo democracy (covering for Fascism), with the Fundies stacked up in the DoJ and our justice system teetering under their faulty foundation.

If we clean them out now, we're still a democracy:-)

Man that felt good.

That woman's behavior on TV was disgusting and more un-American than anything Barack Obama has ever done on a bad day.

14. Thanks for the Clarifications - - Donated!

There's another $25 in the kitty. Now. her fundraising isn't going to stop, but if the DCCC is considering giving him money, will be actually be able to compete with her? Any insiders on the ground in the area?

I read his position on various issues at his website. They're sensible. I'm glad to have supported him.
