Obama "death threat" leads to surprise visit from secret service
Source: ABC 4

LUFKIN, Tex. - A woman is still upset over a surprise visit she received from the U.S. Secret Service a few weeks ago, who investigated alleged remarks that were made about Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama "ending up dead on a hospital floor."

Two secret Service agents arrived at the home of Jessica Hughes about two weeks ago, inquiring about the remarks. Apparently, Hughes had been contacted by an Obama campaign staffer over the phone -- which led to a verbal disagreement.

The staffer claims that Hughes said, "I will never support Obama and he will wind up dead on a hospital floor."

Due to the threatening nature of the report, the Secret Service decided to investigate the matter.

1. Uh huh...
"She asked if I was an Obama supporter, to which I replied, 'No, I don't support him. Your guy is a socialist who voted four times in the state Senate to let little babies die in hospital closets. I think you should find something better to do with your time.' (And then) I hung up," Hughes told the Lufkin Daily News.

15. Does that mean that big babies are safe in the "hospital closets"? The phrasing these people choose
is so atrocious I would laugh if I wasn't so busy choking on vomit.

4. The SS has no sense of humor.
She has no right to be upset unless she was totally framed as she asserts.

5. It is possible
But I don't think anyone would foward an untrue claim to the SS. I wouldn't, if someone did say something like that I would say something even if I didn't have proof.

7. Sounds to me like the Obama solicitor mis-heard this idiot
The "babies dead in the hospital closet/floor" is a right-wing talking point, and it sounds like exactly what one of these nuts would say.

On the other hand, if a person were threatening Obama, "dead on the hospital floor" is an odd phrase.

The solicitor, like most normal people, probably doens't listen to hate radio and was therefore unfamiliar with all that dead baby nonsense, and heard "Obama" and "dead" and jumped (logically) to the wrong conclusion.

12. sorry, the benefit of the doubt goes to the worker...
and not the loonie... I've been working the phones for Obama... and you should hear some of the hate and vile that comes out of these people's mouths...

While that baby in the closet might be a talking point, I can also figure that the point was followed up by something like... "and Obama should end up on the hospital floor dead too" or... "it should be Obama..."

14. Fair enough
Good on you for working the phones - all that hate would make me crazy.

I do canvassing on foot, and people must feel somewhat inhibited about yelling at a 6' woman....plus this is a pretty blue area....

16. It is difficult to say the least
Mostly because of the hate and the apathy... there was one call, though, that angered me for days. It was to an elderly guy named "Dee"... now what kinda name is that, especially for a guy? But this guy had the nerve to go into a tirade about Barack's name... "I ain't votin' for somebody with a stupid name like Barackarackarackarackarackarackarackaracktheuugphoodphewthuh...". It took everything I had to act professional and close the call.... instead of asking him if he'd ever had any problems with a name like "Dee".

22. Well, my guy's named Dee
Which is sort of like being "the boy named Sue." Fortunately, he didn't grow up with a chip on his shoulder and is a kind and sensitive man.

He is also an obama supporter who will never pull another Republican lever as long as he lives.

31. Oh, no offense taken
He actually likes his name. It's an old family name; men in his family have been giving it to their sons for years.
Besides, you're right, it's an unusual name for a man. Took my family a while to get used to it. He did NOT name his son "Dee." His son is grateful.

35. "dead on the hospital floor" sounds like a JFK reference to me
But then any spoken connection between death and a presidential candidate, no matter how it's phrased should be investigated.

28. They've learned a lot since Oswald, Hinckley, and Squeaky
No one has come close to shooting a president since Hinckley shot Reagan. I think they are up to the challenge that having a black president presents, as long as the FBI or some law enforcement has undercover people inside the Klan and other groups like that.

13. Her account of what was said
is so different from what the staffer said that I have a hard time believing her side of the story. I doubt that a staffer would make up something like that.

I hope the SS is investigating those people shouting out at McCain and Palin rallies too.

I've been in campaign offices with phone banks. The noise is incredible, so bad that I can't work the phones because I can't understand what people are saying. I plant signs instead.

19. How do people get so obsessed with fetuses?
Calling them "babies."

And why is that the only thing that matters to them. It's one thing to be against abortion and to think it wrong, but to these people it seems to be the ONLY thing that matters.

27. This quote of hers is interesting:

"I find it hard to believe that (campaign volunteers) don't tape these calls. They call people unsolicited and they aren't monitoring the calls or recording them? I think that is absolutely ridiculous," she said.

So she thinks it should be normal to record calls? I guess if they were told it was being recorded that's fine, but this just struck me for some reason. What is her reason for them needing to record them? What do they need to preserve?

29. I think she probably means for quality control
The same way any telephone-oriented business will record your call, or calls to you, both as a way to prevent asshats in the organization from running amok and to give them training material, sometimes achieving both goals with single calls.
