Brigitte Bardot slams Palin as a 'disgrace to women'
Source: AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE

French film legend-turned-activist Brigitte Bardot took a swipe at Sarah Palin on Tuesday, saying the US vice presidential candidate was a disgrace to women.
"I hope you lose these elections because that would be a victory for the world," Bardot wrote in an open letter to Republican John McCain's running mate in the November vote.

"By denying the responsibility of man in global warming, by advocating gun rights and making statements that are disconcertingly stupid, you are a disgrace to women and you alone represent a terrible threat, a true environmental catastrophe," wrote Bardot.

The screen icon from the 1960s, who now heads an animal rights foundation, went on to assail Palin for supporting Arctic oil exploration that could jeopardize delicate animal habitats and for dismissing measures to protect polar bears. ...

10. Yeah
That's the most important thing about her - what kind of person reads this article about her and all they take away is that she's hot? Disgusting. Way to invalidate everything else about her.

Clueless.

:sarcasm:

So, I wonder if these guys who think Palin is hot will hear this and - at least the ones who are old enough to have had a youthful crush on Bardot - suddently change their minds about McCain/Palin.

You go Brigitte!

Ex-film star Bardot gets fifth racism conviction

PARIS (Reuters Life!) - A Paris court fined former film star Brigitte Bardot 15,000 euros ($23,400) on Tuesday for inciting racial hatred by insulting Muslims, her fifth conviction on similar charges in 11 years.

12. I'm not so sure insulting Muslims should necessarily be considered inciting racial hatred.
I'm very familiar with the challenges to Europe with the increased immigration from Muslim countries. It is a complex situation to be certain. Unfortunately, there is a point where political correctness runs amok. When a religion is exempted from criticism because it can be construed as racism that's taking it a bit far.

From what I have been able to glean, Bardot's opposition to the Muslim community focuses on the acts she finds contrary to what she considers her country's values. i.e. wholesale slaughter of sheep for a ritualistic purpose. I'm not so sure I'm comfortable with curtailing critical speech to protect religious sensitivities. Islam has got to reach a point where it can hold it's own in a rational debate about it's tenets, proscriptions and prescriptions without issuing death warrants against critics.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali's books speak to this dilemma fairly well. I do not agree with her on all issues, but she has an excellent grasp on integration of Muslim immigrants. I highly recommend her work.

28. Granted, she spews enough right-wing garbage to make my head spin....
but I'm just more comfortable with being precise about her views. She's poison water at the well but inciting racial hatred by pointing out inhumane acts in the name of Islam? Can't really fault her there. But that's probably because I just got finished reading Ali's books.

You know me. I'm as left as they come and teach/preach comparative world religion. Religious tolerance should only go so far though. When religious teachings dehumanize and ultimately brutalize a segment of the population it's time to cry foul. In a very loud voice. No matter what the apologists want to spin, Islam has a lot to answer for with regard to its practical treatment of women.

20. Brigitte Bardot is much worse than Palin. She is openly racist, opposing interracial marriage.
Bardot's court role as racist bigot
-snip-

The charges against Bardot, 69, related to her best-selling book, A Cry In The Silence, a right-wing rant which spares almost nobody in its vitriol.

In her book, she laments the "Islamisation of France" and the "underground and dangerous infiltration of Islam", denigrates racial mixing, immigration and the role of women in politics, and denounces benefits for "polygamous families" and the Muslim festival of Eid el Kebir.

She also attacks a variety of other groups including gays and lesbians whom she describes as "cheap faggots or circus freaks" and the unemployed as people "who only accept jobs on the black market ... and cash in on taxpayers' money".

"Mme Bardot presents Muslims as barbaric and cruel invaders, responsible for terrorist acts and eager to dominate the French to the extent of wanting to exterminate them," the court said.
http://agonist.org/story/2004/6/11/45526/3105

Anouit had told Bertrand he should be ashamed of publishing such a book. It was pure fascism. Had I seen the bit about cross-breeding; how in the animal world it was avoided because it produced mongrels? Or how the handicapped were overpromoted in charity telethons (which Bardot in a wordplay renamed 'telcons', as in con, or stupid). That sounded like the Nazis, he said. He believed she was being used by Jean-Marie Le Pen. If she wasn't already a member of the NF, they ought to give her a party card straight away.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/article849134.ece?token=null&offset=24&page=3

In her book she wrote about issues such as racial mixing, immigration, the role of women in politics and Islam.

The book also contained a section attacking what she called the mixing of genes and praised previous generations who, she said, had given their lives to push out invaders.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/3794513.stm

In 2003, she published a book entitled 'A Scream in the Silence', that brought more accusations of both anti-Muslim and anti-gay bigotry. She denounced interracial marriage, called homosexuals "fairground freaks" and assaulted the government for being over-generous to the unemployed and to immigrants.
-snip-

While not present for the verdict, she had tearfully defended herself to the court a few weeks before. "I was born in 1934; at that time interracial marriage wasn't approved. There are many new languages in the new Europe. Mediocrity is taking over from beauty and splendor. There are many people who are filthy, badly dressed and badly shaven."
http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/brigitte-bardots-crusade-to-save-canadas-seals-471171.html

In her book she writes that people with disabilities are a burden on taxpayers:

"les contribuables déjà saignés à blanc pour venir en aide à tous ces pauvres difformes, infirmes, paralysés, incapables de parler, ni de se mouvoir, dépendant à vie d'une société déjà précarisée par le nombre surabondant des sangsues qui la rendent exsangue."

Google translation: "taxpayers already bled white to help all those poor deformed, sick, paralyzed, unable to speak or move, dependent life of a society already uncertain at the sake of leeches that make it bloodless."

22. I don't consider either woman to be a credit to my gender at the moment.
But I also disagree with France's laws that fine and/or jail someone for proclaiming their bigoted points of view. It's a curtailment of liberties that offends my personal values and in my opinion makes her a bit of a martyr to the right. I think it gives too much credence to her racist views, muddies the complex situation of Muslim integration in European society and depresses true and productive debate.

She's right and she's wrong, like most of us.

I happen to agree with her that some practices made normative by Islam should not be tolerated in a modern society just because they are religiously based. If that were the case we'd still be burning the neighborhood herbalist at the stake as a witch.

I'm not inclined to read her right-wing books, but I can't bring myself to support censoring her. If she didn't publish and speak we wouldn't have the opportunity to respond with more enlightened views. *grin*

27. Some of her commentary is rather hostile...
... it would seem. Not sure if that's partly a function of growing into old age as well as her rightish leanings. But as far as opposing interracial marriage, most orthodox Jews, devout Muslims and Christians also vehemently oppose it, sometimes with extreme violence. So really, what's the difference if an old woman from another age does as well?
