Exclusive: Obama to hit McCain on Keating scandal
By MIKE ALLEN | 10/5/08 10:09 PM EDT Text Size:

(D-Ill.) on Monday will launch a multimedia campaign to draw attention to the involvement of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the “Keating Five” savings-and-loan scandal of 1989-91, which blemished McCain’s public image and set him on his course as a self-styled reformer.

Pushing back against what it calls “guilt-by-association” tactics by McCain, the Obama campaign is e-mailing millions of supporters a link to a website, KeatingEconomics.com, that will have a 13-minute documentary on the scandal beginning at noon Eastern time on Monday. The overnight e-mails urge recipients to pass the link on to friends.

The Obama campaign, including its surrogates appearing on radio and television, will argue that the deregulatory fervor that caused massive, cascading savings-and-loan collapses in the last ‘80s was pursued by McCain throughout his career, and helped cause the current credit crisis.

Obama’s offensive comes after McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, spent two days telling voters, donors and reporters that Obama showed poor judgment in his relationship with the former radical William Ayers.

McCain’s campaign has vowed to make a major issue of Obama’s Chicago relationships in coming days, with a senior McCain official telling Politico that they are “the vehicle that allows us to question Obama’s truthfulness about his past and his plans for the future.”

Palin didn't back off in Nebraska tonight so I guess the gloves are off for both campaigns.

90. nice quote
"On August 29, 2006, McCain attended a dinner party in Montenegro that was followed by a champagne reception on a yacht that was hosted by Deripaska. Also reportedly in attendance was Davis, whose lobbying firm was representing the government of Montenegro; Munk; and Nathan Rothschild who, on March 20 of this year held a controversial fundraiser for McCain at Spencer House in London. The fundraiser raised questions about McCain receiving illegal "in kind" contributions from a foreign national.

"The 70th birthday bash was reportedly a promise of huge cash donations to McCain's forthcoming presidential campaign, another indication of violations of law prohibiting donations from foreign sources. The quid pro quo for Derpaska was that McCain and his top lobbyists were pushing the European Aeronautic Defense and Space Company (EADS) and its Airbus subsidiary to receive the lucrative US Air Force contract to replace the Air Force's fleet of refueling tankers. The reported source for the aluminum in the Airbus tanker aircraft is Deripaska's Russian Aluminum Company (RusAl)."

7. Careful, Obama
Sarah's gonna wink, say "you betcha" and accuse you of pointing back to the past, when all the McCain campaign wants to do is talk about the future. And we all know how devastating that will be!

I wonder if anyone in the major media will notice the contradiction?

82. I get what you are saying, for sure
But deregulation is the point here. It is a big issue NOW. And Ayers hasn't been a weatherman since the 60s, so that's looking backwards even more.

I like it that this is a documentary, and fairly in depth, I assume, rather than just a mention of the word, or an ad.

then use that foundation for the next phase of attack.

Most people don't know what happened with the Keating scandal, it's parallels to the current crisis, and that McCain learned nothing from it.

It is brilliant to use it as the October surprise.

26. Welcome
I think it was very good

Keep saying that cynical newspaper people don't understand that every move you make has always been for the enrichment of Arizona . . . the education of our Native Americans on the reservations . . . for the love of the elderly in Sun City and Green Valley.

Keep telling them that it wasn't that you were bought off but that Charlie Keating got special help only because he was one of the biggest employers in the state.

Just keep sitting there and staring into the camera and denying that Keating bought you for money and jet plane trips and vacations.

So what if he gave you $112,000? Just keep smiling at the cameras and saying you did nothing wrong.

You won't let anyone forget that you were a prisoner of war. But you have played that tune too long. By now your constant reminders about your war record make you seem like a modern version of Arthur Miller's tragic failure Willy Loman.

But, alas, it seems that in 1989 McPOW hadn't yet wrung all the mileage out his war stories.

20. It's going to take more than a viral email to get the job done. We need TV and radio ADS and
LOTS OF THEM.

Also, while they're at it, how about some clips of Repukes DEMANDING that Teresa Heinz Kerry release her tax forms so America can see them, then a reminder that Cindy Deville is still refusing to show us hers.

I'm a Vietnam vet and I'd really love for a 527 to put some ads up asking why McAnus stopped the hearings on POW's and MIA's. There are miles of video of loved ones of unaccounted for POW's and MIA's asking him to help keep the investigations open. And while they're at it, ask McPOW why he had his POW records sealed.

The list is endless.

This is NOT negative campaigning. It is educating the voters so they can make an informed decision about who is the best person to be our President.

22. Obama camp will put out a 13 minute Keating vid tomorrow
Source: CNN

Heard on CNN just now, 11 pm EST. This was reported "a few hours ago" according to the CNN reporter. The video will fully explain McCain's involvement in the Keating 5 scandal to the American people, it was said.

I'm pretty sure it was on a John King segment, but not 100% sure of that.

Read more: www.cnn.com /

Yo, McCain... "incoming!"

13 minutes is a long video, although I'll bet there will be smaller usable segments within it. Investing that much time in it says to me that they plan to make this a knockout punch.

32. If they are smart, there will be sound-bytable components to this story.
This story really can't be told in 30-40 seconds. They are educating the voter on what McCain's quid-pro-quo's for an Arizona banker that ground his S&L business into the ground....wiping out lots of savings accounts and shareholder value to the tune of $1.3BB. I suspect that this will be totally factually and well produced. Once it becomes mainstream, I'm sure there'll be shorts that can provide 30 second sound-bytes.

29. Given the release and the buzz, I don't see how the MSM ignores this.
I think they've been bending over backwards (maybe forwards) to keep this out of the election cycle. Now, Obama is giving them cover to revisit this story. It is relevant and it will damage whatever veneer of maverickiness McCain still thinks he has. It will suck the air out of whatever smears and guilt-by-non-association that McCain's camp will try to start airing in their new gutter campaign. Good. This is relevant and it does show the real McCain who was damn lucky to get off with a Senate ethics censure. And he wasn't 8 years old when this went done. He was 58.

... even after he supposedly "learned his lesson" from the K5 scandal, then this isn't remotely a negative attack in the fashion of Wright and Ayers. I hope that's the approach they use.

McCain maintained his anti-regulatory approach, but took on a reformers facade.

Obama shouldn't be held accountable for the actions of other people.

However, John McCain should be held accountable for the actions of John McCain.

McCain tried to protect Keating because he contributed to him and McCain should be held accountable.

46. McCain always had more to lose in a shoving match.
Could be that his handlers do not expect him to win and they are only hoping to use him to tarnish Obama before his inevitable victory---never caring how much collateral damage they do to the McCain brand name in the process---so that they can try for a real right wing conservative run in 4 years. The bailout would make sense in that scenario. Hamstring Obama, keep him from enacting a lot of popular social programs.

48. The Keating scandal is particularly rich in lurid, repulsive excess and political pals.
Anyone who worked for Keatings companies has stories that would blow your mind.

Just the money his wife spent at the Phoenician while being built by Keating is beyond belief, but true.

61. freaking finally -- i don't know why they didn't bring this up sooner...
by the way, this brings up a point i was discussing with my husband..

during the keating 5 thing i was in college and clueless and didn't follow politics. I know that there were hearings, ect, savings and loan, Keating, etc...I know the basics.

But how HOW, did McCain still have a political career after this kind of scandal? I don't get it.

I'm glad to see the Obama campaign bring this stuff up.
I'm sick to death of McShame's and Putrid's lies about Obama.
We don't even have to lie about McCain. Just telling the truth about his past is enough. It's not "dirty" if it's the truth.

111. Maybe this is the best time.
If brought up sooner, they would have found a way to weasel out and moved on.

By bringing it up so close to election day, hopefully it will still be on the everyone's mind when they enter the poll booth.

63. wrong strategy?
I have a bad feeling Obama is using the wrong strategy. Obama should appear to stand above these personal attacks. If he responds, he gets in a mud fight with McCain, and the public gets turned off, thinking both candidates are dirty politicians. Obama's message gets lost. In addition, my understanding is that independents don't like personal attacks.

On the other hand, I understand that Obama can't let McCain drive the news cycle. Even though much of the main stream media has dismissed as false the Palin claims that Obama "Pal'd around with terrorist," talking heads like Brokaw forced an Obama spokesperson to answer the absurd charge. (Brokaw should have asked the question "Why is McCain repeating obviously false statements?")

One last note: even worse for McCain than the Keating scandal is his association with G Gordon Liddy. See here:

89. Try to understand that a major political scandal
that is part of the public record, and for many of us part of our memories, is not in any way a personal attack. Speaking of McCain's political record is not personal. Personal would be bringing up the fact that Cindy is the other woman he picked up in a bar while cheating on his first wife because she had a limp. The adultery of John and Cindy, now that is personal, but I'd go there in a heartbeat. The McPalin campaign has put everything on the table. They believe marriage is reserved for one man, one woman, and Cindy McCain.
Personal is talking about the price of Slag Cindy's outfits while reading from the New Testament on teh subject of personal adornments, but I'd go there too. Personal would be talking about John covering up Cindy's enormous appitite for drugs, pills, powders. She's a huge addict as well as an adulterous home breaker. Now that is personal, but it is also true as can be. And these people prance around pretending to be moral paragons, judging and oppressing good people on the false basis of their own non existant moral superiority.

Hooray for Obama.

72. McCain asked for it; another case of bad judgement.
It's time for the Obama campaign to bring out the big guns. Have ads with elderly people recounting how they lost everything in the Keating 5 scandal. Show grainy black and white pictures of McCain at the Keating hearings. It's time for Obama to break into double digit leads, and it's time for John McCain to get knocked the f*** out.

81. great strategy!
All the themes that McCain plans to use against Obama have already played themselves out; there's not much else they can squeeze out of them. By holding back on Keating 5 until now, the Obama campaign is playing a brilliant hand -- the story will generate buzz, with the current crisis giving it fresh relevance.
